The article provides an insight into the reign of the Syrian president, Bashar al-Assad. He is compared to Charles de Gaulle, a stubborn French leader. Regarding the scorpion’s tale, Russia assumes the role of a frog whereby it tries to settle the Syrian war, but with President Assad’s history, the negotiation might collapse. Mr. Assad has relied on Russia for military, money and political influence hence gaining confidence and ambition since it supported the Syrian government forces. According to David W. Lesch, Mr. Putin thinks that Syria is in need of Russia, but Mr. Assad with his arrogance thinks the reverse (Barnard, 2016). Besides, Mr. Assad became the president in 2000 after inheriting the throne from his father. His ruling relies on the small family and security officials. Even after Russian’s withdrawal, Syrian could not thank them for the support. Bushra Khalil has described the mood of Syrian officials as cheerful, and supporters and detractors have echoed it (Barnard, 2016). Mr. Assad’s advisers praise him by saying he will continue to be a prominent leader.
Mr. Putin is determined to diminish the power of the Syrian leader. However, Iran is in touch with Syria to keep Mr. Assad in power. According to Mr. Lesch, Mr. Assad will have to engage in a political process to satisfy the Russian president (Barnard, 2016). The process might not go through since the Syrian government has the notion of dragging and complicating the process. Also, the system of governance is dependent on a single leader. Mr. Assad has survived political protest and war because his opponents underestimate him. Though his officials appear in peace talks, they do not give specific requests. Moreover, Mr. Assad has failed to honor the United States request to destroy the country’s chemical weapons.
