Macbeth by William Shakespeare
Shakespeare's Macbeth is set in the Medieval period when there were various significant political changes across Europe. Multiple socio-political issues are highlighted in the play, which Shakespeare attempts to change. One of these traditions is tyranny. The author wants the reader to see how this form of leadership can be detrimental to the leaders themselves as well as his subjects. This tradition is mirrored in the play through the theme of ambition and power. Tyranny developed through ambition is associated with greed. As part of Macbeth's ambition, he becomes selfish and greedy. He does not agree to accept Banquo's linage as a potential heir to kingship and not prepared to share power with his wife. "Only for them, and mine eternal jewel / Given to the common enemy of man, /To make them kings, the seed of Banquo kings. / Rather than so, come Fate into the list, /And champion me to th'utterance@ (Act III, Scene I). Macbeth's greed makes him wish to keep power for himself and only his family, and this makes him oppress others and even plot to kill Banquo and Fleance.
Shakespeare conveys this idea by using various literary techniques. Specifically, Shakespeare uses imagery through the central character of the play, Lady Macbeth. Reinforced by the use of imagery, Lady Macbeth is the influence behind her Macbeth's ambition to seize power at all available opportunity. The author provides the imagery of Lady Macbeth's milk, which represent the replacement of nurturing and vile poison.
