Introduction
In the twentieth century, humans made laudable and significant achievements technologically and in science. However, it was a century of untold grief full of animosity and senseless killings. As many historians would agree, this century can be described as "the era of genocide," marred with endless atrocities against humankind (Uzonyi & Asal, 2020). The paper is concerned with such mayhems, mainly committed by the Pakistani regime alongside the military in the course of the Bangladesh succession war. The genocide subject was selected because it discusses the suffering and displacement of many people; it is mainly driven by the greed and selfishness of a small group of elites. Notably, the Bangladesh atrocities were more of genocide, as considered by numerous journalists and intellectuals. The main objective here is to show the genocide aspect of the Bangladesh massacre, dissecting it on the basis of resolve and victim group. In terms of these two criteria, the accepted meaning of genocide ought to be profuse. Every type of recognizable group can be encompassed as a victim group. In reference to the resolve, the whole victim group does not have to be annihilated physically. If any group has its intellectuals and political elite assassinated, that amounts to genocidal destruction (Rummel, 2022). The heinous killings create a big vacuum, leaving the victim groups exposed to all forms of challenges. As a unique entity, they have little opportunity of thriving as a highly ambitious and self-respected group. Through a selective mass murder like the one that happened in Bangladesh in 1971, an entire ethnic or racial group can be wiped out, which qualifies in all sense to be described as a genocide. This paper will use secondary sources that will be correctly referenced and presented, for example, thematically or temporally.
The inhabitants of Pakistan were highly hopeful and dreamt of a better Pakistan upon its inception. However, the West Pakistanis oppressed people from the eastern part of the country since the nation gained its independence. In this case, the West Pakistanis appeared to use the legal definitions after the Nazis in Germany adopted Nuremberg (Heideman, 2017). They knew that Pakistan is distinguished into distinct ethnic formations where some are stronger and more valuable than others. The West's dominated administration subscribed to this false theory and opined that the West Pakistanis race was more valuable and stronger than the East. Despite having only 16% of the country's total land area, East Pakistan was always typically the region of the majority, with approximately 76 million inhabitants. On the other side (West Pakistan), there were only 55 million occupants despite having four provinces (Ghoshl, 2018). Before Bengali's declaration as a Pakistan's state language in 1956, the Bengalis staged massive protests, where many were killed.
Inequality in the Economy
West Pakistanis exacerbated the economic divide. Although Pakistan generated most of its foreign cash by exporting jute, which used to be grown in East Pakistan, the Western side's per capita income was significantly higher than the Eastern's, and the gap widened with time. Therefore, from 1969–to 1970, the East's per capita income was 62% higher smaller than the West's, compared to a difference of 30% in the early 1960s (Chowdhury et al., 2021). In 1950, West Pakistan had only 40 colleges. However, this number had risen to over 270 institutions in 1970. There were only 163 colleges in East Pakistan in 1970, compared to 50 in 1949. In the West, the rise in university scholars was 31 times that of the East, but only five times (Chowdhury et al., 2021). Another significant issue was a large capital transfer from East Pakistan to West Pakistan, but only a small transfer of labor. In 1947, West Pakistan had only nine textile mills while the East had 11, indicating a significant disparity in industrial development. There were 149 mills in West Pakistan in 1971, whereas only 25 were found in East Pakistan (Rahman, 2021). Indeed, West Pakistanis created a protected market in East Pakistan to increase sales of their high-priced goods that could not stand a chance in the global market.
