Autism in Leah’s Voice by Lori Demonia
Lori Demonia’s picture book Leah’s Voice explores the challenges children with autism encounter when meeting others who do not understand autism. In this case, Demonia tells the story using two sisters and their encounter with other children without information on autism. One sister has autism, which means the other struggles to explain she has special needs (Demonia, 2012). Due to this, the sister feels disappointed by their friends’ inability to understand that her sister has autism. Despite the challenges these sisters face during encounters with other children, the sister without autism demonstrates her devotion and kindness by teaching the need to include everyone and accept others (Demonia, 2012). The book provides an excellent example for children and reminds adults about the importance of treating every person respectfully and accepting differences. The paper explores autism, explores the book’s representation of autism and how it can be meaningfully implemented among children of ages 8-12, explains why it is necessary to share the book to discuss autism to children of ages 8-12 and explains the role of the activities in fostering deeper learning about autism to children.
