For this assessment, watch the video "Ecotourism and Costa Rica" to take a virtual field trip. This virtual field trip takes you to Costa Rica, a small country in Central America. The virtual field trip explores the ecotourism in Cost Rica to depict some of the ways in which tourism can be eco-friendly.
After taking this virtual field trip, respond to the following questions:
• What is biodiversity?
• How do ecosystems function when there is low biodiversity versus when there is high biodiversity?
• Why does Costa Rica have high biodiversity?
• Why biodiversity is considered important for the functioning of an ecosystem?
• What are the limits of ecotourism in protecting the environment?
Submission Requirements:
Submit your response in a Microsoft Word document of the following specifications:
• Font: Arial, point 12, double-spaced
• Length: 2–3 pages
• Citation Style: APA
Evaluation Criteria:

• Did you explain what biodiversity is?
• Did you compare how ecosystems function when there is low biodiversity versus when there is high biodiversity?
• Did you explain why Costa Rica has high biodiversity?
• Did you address why biodiversity is considered important for ecosystem function?
• Did you describe the limits of ecotourism in protecting the environment?

Biodiversity in Costa Rica
Biodiversity is a term used in ecological studies to describe different varieties of life on the planet. Biodiversity, therefore, provides the basis of all ecosystems through the interactions of life forms. Biodiversity also underpins the interactions from the largest mammal to the basic bacteria and microbes existing in a given ecological zone (Jeffries, 2006). Costa Rica, as a country, is endowed with rich biodiversity. It is abounding with wildlife coupled to its splendid coasts and jungles. Costa Rica is considered to be rich in biodiversity due to its ecosystems. The country has coasts, mountainous systems that provide varied microclimates. The country boasts of a variety of species that inhabit these ecosystems.
Some regions have higher biodiversity compared to others. In the state of these extremities, for instance, low biodiversity versus high biodiversity, ecosystems function differently. The difference in biodiversity affects the functioning of ecosystems. Uniqueness of climate is one of the major factors that contributes to the difference in biodiversity. Low biodiversity affects the stability and productivity of ecosystems. Under such situations, an unstable ecosystem, which is due to low biodiversity, is likely to face dangers of species' extinction (Jeffries, 2006). Loss of biodiversity may impact sustainability in affected ecosystems. In areas where there is a sharp decline in biodiversity, most species find it hostile. Ecosystems rich in high biodiversity functions exceptionally with interconnected food web and food chain. Richness in biodiversity enhances the predator-prey relationship making the ecosystems sustainable and conducive (Jeffries, 2006).
Biodiversity in Costa Rica is unmatched when compared to other countries. One question in the minds of tourists is why Costa Rica has a rich biodiversity. The most basic explanation for this question is strong environmental education given to the citizens and visitors. The robust education taken by conservationists has enabled the citizens and tourists to understand the importance of stewardship in protecting sensitive ecosystems. Although it can be a lifetime commitment to study the biodiversity in Costa Rica, dedicated efforts to expand the knowledge on ecosystems has helped biodiversity to remain intact (Mitchell, Pentzer, & ABC-Clio Information Services, 2008). In addition, various organizations set up within Costa Rica have continued with the effort of promoting sustainable use of biodiversity.
Ecosystems play a critical role in regulating the climatic processes, breaking down of wastes and consequent recycle of nutrients among others.
Continued loss of biodiversity has immeasurable impacts on the ecosystems. Biodiversity has four important services rendered to an ecosystem. Biodiversity through microbes, fungi and insects support nutrient cycling that is essential for soil formation and primary production. In the second function, biodiversity has a provi...
