When T. Ray and Deborah were dating, he gave her a whale pin that reveals his complex behavior because it shows Lily that her father was once a pleasant man. She has the pin when confronting him, and he appears to change in this moment. He briefly feels the sadness and rage he had when his wife left, but he allows Lily to remain with August. She has always perceived him as a cruel man but had never thought that he was bitter because of heartbreak.
2 Setting and irony
When Rosaleen and Lily are arrested, Lily comments that “sometimes you want to fall on your knees and thank God in heaven for all the poor news reporting that goes on in the world” (Kidd, 2003 p.66). She implies that their names are not in the paper because the police are not looking for them. It ultimately indicates to readers how Lily is self-centered just like her peers because she thinks that she and Rosaleen are worthy of appearing in the papers.
