Bullying is a distinctive pattern of harming and humiliating othersintentionally and repeatedly causing injury or discomfort. It is mostly done to those who are in some way smaller, weaker, and younger or in any way more vulnerable. It can take the form of physical contact, words or more subtle actions. The bullied individual typically has trouble defending him or herself and does nothing to prevent the bullying. It is a very durable behavioral style, largely because bullies get what they want over a period of time. Bullies are made, not born, and it happens especially at an early age. If the normal aggression of a 2-year-old is not handled well it can result to a bully grown up.
Many studies show that bullies lack prosocial behavior and are untroubled by anxiety, and do not understand others' feelings. They typically see themselves quite positively. Those who frequently bully have relationship issues with both their parents and their peers which as a result leads to such acts. Electronic bullying has also become a weighty problem over the past few years. The handheld devices give bullies unlimited access at any time to their preys and harassment can often be carried out without prior notice.
Bullies couldn't exist without victims, and they don't pick on just anyone; those singled out lack assertiveness and radiate fear long before they ever encounter a bully. No one likes a bully, but no one likes a victim either. Grown-up bullies wreak havoc in their relationships and in the workplace.
