The different communication styles of managers and leaders

Communication between employees and their manager is important to all business operations. Managers who consistently fail to effectively communicate with their respective employees generate an atmosphere of indecisiveness and uncertainty in the places of work. An employee who may not 100% sure about his responsibility is certainly not going to perform his roles according to his best ability. Choosing an appropriate communication mode can impact positively to the organization since the message would be understood and appropriate actions implemented. Leaders and managers may use the following ways of communication to guide their organization: The first form of communication is via meetings (Detert, Burris, Harrison, and Martin, 2013).Gathering employees in a room demand their attention, and it obliges them to listen. The manager should involve the employees to encourage liveliness in the meeting.
Another form of communication by managers is by telephone (Grossman, 2016). Telephones are tools that are indispensable in the globalized world. The telephone is considered a useful tool for communication as opposed to email whenever there is the need for brainstorming or when the input of employees is needed all through the conversation. However, communication via telephone is usually deprived of the non-verbal cues. The interpretation of what is said by people is often facilitated by their facial expressions and gestures. Communication via phone is usually common in locations with a lot of distractions which may hinder individual’s full concentration. Phone calls should be discouraged in situations involving the discussion of emotive subjects. Whenever instructions are given via telephone, one should get the individual to repeat the instructions as a way of ensuring that the instructions are understood.
Face-to-face is another form of communication. Many employees advocate for the face-to-face conversations at their places of work. Face-to-face conversations enable the manager to interpret the non-verbal cues given by the employee and this, in turn, acts as a guide to the tone and approach by the manager (Solomon, Costea, and Nita, 2016). Managers ought to learn how to speak and listen to their employees. Employees tend to give an excellent response and be involved in the dialogue that is honest whenever they feel they are being listened to and understood by their managers.
Lastly, managers and leaders may communicate to their employees via writing. The simplest and cheapest form of an up-to-date or modern communication is via email (Grossman, 2016). The main disadvantage of using emails is that they lack or are deprived of the non-verbal cues. The person’s voice is also not heard and therefore, problems regarding the interpretation of the email may arise. Communication via email ought to be precise and direct. The use of languages that are ambiguous may also cause misunderstandings that could be aggravated as the conversation via email progress. Slang and jargon should be avoided at any cost in email conversations. For the purpose of messages that are one-way, managers could employ communication forms that are traditional, for instance, newsletters, formal letters, memos and press releases. Emotive topics should be avoided when using this type of communication since it could cause resentment by the employee. Other forms of communication include the use of presentation and the use of visuals.
Microsoft’s new Chief Executive Officer (C.E.O), Satya Nadella addressed Microsoft’s partners and customers via live webcast from the headquarters of the software maker. In his message the stated that his goal would be to help the software maker flourish in the world that incorporates cloud-based and mobile technologies as the core or center of computing. He stated that everything would be connected to data and cloud and that it would be mediated by the software. He also emphasized on the need to be confident in the company’s capability or ability around software since it leads to new experiences.
The message was conveyed electronically via live webcast. Live webcast is a synchronous channel of communication since it requires the receiver and the sender to be available at a particular time. Synchronous communications are usually based or focused on the immediacy of the response or feedback. The receiver normally has the chance of commenting on the message while it is still being delivered due to the availability of the...
