There is a huge contrast between the video, Want to help someone? Shut up and listen! By Ernesto Sirolli and article “a day in the life of a policy maker” by Joan Abbey. Both articles reveal the essence of listening as a major attribute in tackling roles assigned to a person. Ernesto Sirolli describes so many projects they have been involved in with while in Africa but was unsuccessful in later stages. He gives an instance where they initiated a project on tomato growing and zucchini growing which all very good ideas only that they did not consult or listened to the locals. The tomatoes are later destroyed or consumed by the hippos thus failing to achieve the eventual aim of providing food to the locals. Ernesto Sirolli paints a similar picture of European donor agencies working in African nations who come with their policies but fail terribly. In the end, Ernesto states that the best remedy is shutting up and listening since most solutions are there by the people. He infers that people know their problems. Similar to Ernesto Sirolli, Joan Abbey has many roles assigned to her. It is surprising since most of the tasks entail mainly listening to the other people. At 8.00 am public hearing begins where several people speak including media personalities, directors and people holding signs indicative of protests. After that, she goes to a board meeting where she is the only social worker where she also listens to what they say.
