The dream of having a federation made up of all sovereign states in Africa has been around for many years with its genesis crossly linked to a 1924 poem entitled “Hail, United States of Africa” composed by Marcus Garvey (Asamoah, 2014). This dream gained more prominence in 1950’s as most countries in Africa started to gain independence. Earlier Pan-African leaders believed that a united African Federation would improve comparative advantage of Africa on the global scale and would help to dilute western domination on individual African states. While the dream of a united federation of Africa seems bright and promising for African states, lack of goodwill by the current crop of African leadership coupled with a myriad of challenges that characterize modern African states make the dream of creating United States of Africa elusive.
