Student's Name: Class: Professor: Date: Dead Poets Society (theme of carpe diem) Dead Poets Society is an American drama film written by the famous Tom Schulman and was directed by Robin Williams and Peter Weir in the year 1989. The film is based on a true story of a teacher who inspired his student's through his excellent teaching of poets. In the movie; an important theme manifests itself and is represented by the three main characters namely Todd, Charlie, and Neil. The theme of carpe diem simply means to seize the day in Latin language and is well represented by Charlie. Charlie Dalton is a fully developed character and remains the same throughout the film making him a static character. Charlie comes from a wealthy background, and this influences him to be an arrogant and a cocky student at the school. He takes the theme of carpe diem to heart and does anything based on the theme. One incidence that proves his cocky character is when he mischievously sneaks a paragraph into the paper stating why female students should be allowed at their school. After getting his entire class in trouble with Mr. Keating (Robin William) and Mr. Nolan, he fakes a phone call and pretends that it's God's call hence escaping an expulsion. This also frees the rest of the students hence seizing the day. Dalton is ever happy and wears a smiley face to camouflage his ill motives from the rest of the people at school. Charlie is also quite a romantic guy, and this is manifested in his ability to compose love poems and reciting them to girls. We see him coating two girls at the cave through his activating composures and later have the boys refer to him as 'Nuwanda.' "I have an important announcement! In keeping with the passionate spirits of the dead poets, I'm dropping the name, Charlie Dalton. From now henceforth, call me Nuwanda," (Charlie Dalton, played by Gale Hansen, pg.89). In a conversation at the cave, Neil refers to him as Charlie, and we see him getting furious with Neil for calling out his older name. Neil: "What are you going to do, Charlie?" Charlie: "Damn it, Neil! The name is Nuwanda!" (pg.108). Charlie seizes all his arguments by ensuring that he wins all of them at all costs. Due to his romantic character; Charlie depicts the theme of carpe diem better when he seizes the opportunity to perform in the Dead Poets Society's meeting. He grabs everybody's a...
