In the poem, the SilkenTent poet uses the tent metaphoricallyto symbolize the woman with whom the poet loved and adored."Silken Tent" title of the poem serves as a compelling metaphor for poetry within the context of lives and relationships. The first line of the poem clearly indicates that the poem is about a woman, "she is like in the field a Silken Tent". A silken material is a resilient fabric, sensuous and also graceful. The Silken Tent is a love poem describing the poet's relationships to his beloved. The summer breeze stirs the tent and has dried the dew.When the dew is tried, the tent becomes tight, and the ropes move quickly and gently. Frost addresses in details the universality of human relationships and lives. On the other hand, Merge Piercy uses a bonsai tree as a metaphor for a woman. It is interesting how the poet describes how and the extent of women subordination, control and subjugation without having to tell the audience to whom she is referring. Piercy in her poem directly makes the reader aware of the tone of her poem. The title "A Work of Artifice" as opposed to the word "art" give an implication of some trickery to reach the expected though dishonest result.Robert Frost portrays the character of women as involved in numerous love affairs. She is capricious like the summer air. She is cheerfully and delightedly promiscuous. Similarly in the Piercy's poem when men prune the bonsai tree the poet put this as a metaphor for women, this action imply a sinister and a sadist aspect. Pruning a woman in reality means that a woman is nothing but just a product of the "gardener" for aberrant modifications. In this case, the Piercy suggests the gardener to be male dominated society or what we can call a patriarchal society.Robert Frost in his poem signifies that a woman's reach and abundant engagement and involvement with the world. We portray a woman as a strong character to be able to balance her love affairs and obligations. Like the supporting poles of the tent, her soul is reliable. For this reason, Robert portrays a woman as a high character and sure of what she does. Her love and thoughtful influences for others and her joy and happiness shines clearly. On the other hand, Piercy's "A Work of Artifice" clearly presents the idea of subordination of women by their male counterparts. Deception is evidently employed to convince the tree (woman) its capacity for growth cannot exceed a particular limit no matter what. (Lines 12-16) Show this method of indoctrination as the gardener takes away the potentials and the abilities of his captive beauty. The phrases "small and cozy" (line 13), and "domestic and weak" (line 14), are mostly used when referring to women. Piercy conclusively determines that these are the terms that the society use when portraying the character of a female. Women are deprived and robbed of any belief in their abilities and capabilities and, therefore, end up submitting themselves to living the lives predetermined for them by the surrounding society. In addition, to the lack of bodily strength, they also lack or rather have no authority, mental power and moral strength all of which we incorporate into the stereotype of women. Piercy argues that indoctrination of women should begin early in life. Robert Frost implies that when a woman is free from the duties and obligations she freely go and here and there. The cedar pole in the centre has erected the tent is the symbol of sureness of the soul. Just as the pole supports the pole, her sole is reliable. A woman is not confined to her marriage. She is strong and sure of whatever she does.
In Piercy work of artifice through the description of the bonsai tree, the poet makes it clear that the tree has been restricted from attaining its potential by natural laws set by the society. The art of a bonsai tree subjects what would otherwise be a healthy tree to the confine of a small pot and pruning technique in an attempt to limit its growth and subject and subjugate its form. The bonsai tree is restricted and constrained to a height of "nine inches" by the gardener who ...
