Drug Abuse
Drug abuse can also be referred to as substance abuse, which is a followed pattern in use of a certain substance. The users of these substances consume them in bits or certain amounts through methods that not supervised or recommended by medical experts. Drug abuse is not limited to mood alerting drugs (Leon-Guerrero, 2011). It is important to note that once an activity is done under the influence of objects that are not allowed by the law and the events set policies, it is considered as a substance abuse. In addition, use of illicit drugs stimulants depressants, cannabis, glue, as well as paints also falls under the classification of drug abuse.
War against drug abuse has been there for the last 40 years. This has lead to people describing it as a war characterized by lack of no rules and boundaries, as well. There has been the adoption of different law strategies, as well as criminal policies that are aimed at shunning and punishing drug users. Through research, it is clear that about 76% of people globally have been diagnosed with the use of drugs. This practice has effects to the users’ family, workplace, friends, school life, and the society at large.
Social Perspective on Drug Abuse
Drug abuse has been looked to from a psychological and biological perspective in order to determine the effects they have on the users. In accordance to the analysis based on these facts, it is clear that there is nothing much that an individual can do to escape from this behavior. An individual’s abuse may be emminent from inheritance or genetic issues. This behavior may be a result of biological chemical predominant, a person’s character or behavior disabilities. It is important to note that these assumptions cannot be used to address the social determinants of drug abuse.
According to functionalists, the community provides people with norms and guidelines on drug abuse. This is evident from the fact that people behave different whenever they are under the influence of any drug. For example, there are those who are violent while others’ character changes significantly. Therefore, social norms give the right guidelines to follow while using drugs and alcohol. Once a person follows the physician descriptions it is considered acceptable and remains an acceptable behavior. On the other hand, the society provides the norms on the excessive use of drugs. This behavior causes society disorders or problems. Some of these problems include the following.
Violent Crime
These are force actions or threats directed to other people who include assaults that are aggravated, robbery and rape cases. Victimization is the key factor in this case, which is catalyzed by use of drugs. Acts of sexual assault and victimization, especially to the females, is mostly rampant in the developing countries. It is clear that these are behaviors triggered by drugs. Most people who find themselves in these situations are usually on the influence of drugs and are not in a position of making sound decisions.
Property Crime
Property crime comprises cases of taking a person’s property or money without the use of force or any form of threats. For example, vehicle theft this a common form of social problem in the society. In one way, it may be influenced by the use of alcohol or other drugs. It is easy to trick and still from a person under the influence of drugs. In addition, someone who is under the influence of drugs has a likelihood of getting influence to indulge in unlawful actions in the society.
Interactionist Perspective
Interaction with other people in the society is ordinary behavior and a routine. These kinds of interactions are based on search for goods and services, as well as for personal and professional needs. The way the city life is based might interfere with the social interaction in these areas (Malikin, 1973). It is not easy for people to interact with their neighbors if there were no walkways or parks to take a rest and chat with their neighbors. Interactionism believes that city life is a state of mind, and the society has the obligation to define the social problems. It is also clear that establishing of common ideas linked to urban life, as well as social problems remains a big challenge.
Feminist perspectives, on the other hand, are based on the city formations. These formations are categorized on gender, racial and class inequalities. The focus here is on the unfairness of the cities where there are people who live a luxurious life while others struggle to get their daily needs. These categories help in determining the life one leads in the cities. The way to address the lives of urban dwellers is a big challenge. This is because there are those who have already established fully and exploit the less privileged. In the city, there is the information of groups, which have set goals that they want to achieve. All these groups fight every day to be the leaders of the city.
According to the article on cognitive behavioral therapies, therapies are aimed at relapsing prevention and as a way of seeking safety has come up with ways on giving treatment to those women who abuse drugs. These therapies involve posttraumatic stress disorders. There was a record of decrease in substance abuse and PTSD. In the process of improving PSTD, individuals applied the CBT therapies were through copying and identifying triggers that were emotional without abusing the drugs.
One very clear social problem with women who abused these drugs is that they had a lot of difficult recovering from these behaviors. Barriers in getting employed parenting were also evident, as well as securing medical conditions at the begging of the therapy for these women. On the other hand, those women who encountered a diversified standard in treatments had a reduced substance abuse and PTSD signs after the first 3 months in treatment.
These therapies and treatments aimed at motivating women from not abusing these substances. As a result, there was a record of personal relationships and interlinks that helped in the recovery process. This acted as a positive move in provoking women and coming up with strategies that aimed at stopping the abuse practice. After the session, it was clear that there were strong desires from the drug users to quite the behavior. The social problem of the practice is that the process had enormous impacts on people’s lives. There had to be a reduction in the occupational functionality and that only those women who took part in CBT experienced improved depression problems (Sussman, 2008).
