The effectiveness and success at customer service heavily depends on how well one listens to the customers. There are several reasons why listening is an important skill. First listening leads to understanding. People who give the other party humble time to explain usually have a greater chance of understanding the meaning as opposed to those who do not. With the information and clearly understood, the executive can respond accordingly by either providing information as per the customer needs or provide the correct service. The other important reason why listening is important is to obtain information. If one is a sales executive, he/she may obtain important information about the products or services being offered which may help in improving the quality of service.
How to become a good listener
Have a positive attitude: a positive attitude is created by abandoning previous activities which may act as distractions to the process of listening. It also involves psychological preparation about the subject that is going to be discussed by doing a short mental review. Positive attitude may be altered by having preconceived bias against the speaker or stereotyping the speaker. It is important to avoid such prejudices when before listening to the speaker.
