How A Person's Daily Habits Can Impact Their Personality a Focus on Technology
According to McCloskey & Johnson (2021), habits are broad and pervasive implying that they can be used to define and describe an individual. Personality, referring to traits that are unique to an individual are a culmination of the habits that one exhibits in their day to day routine. Thus, it can be argued that habits and personality are intertwined. This begs the question of how a person’s habits impacts on their personality and consequently how other people discern them. Notable is the fact that personality develops as a result of a learning process induced by behaviors that one exhibits in their lives as argued by McCloskey & Johnson (2021). Further, there is the need to note that habits are influenced by an individual’s experiences and their interaction with society. One of the factors that influences habits and personality in the modern day is the digital migration that has seen most people use social media which has been affecting their habits and consequently their personalities. This paper seeks to determine how the habit of social media interaction on a daily basis influences their habits and consequently their personality.
In the article “Tech and Its Impact on Behavior” by Pando (2019) the reader is introduced to the historical developments in technology that continue to shape human behavior and personalities. According to the article “In 1982, a report published by the National Science Foundation gave its verdict on the future implications of technology on the American population.” Tech was seen as a transformative phenomenon that would come to change families and alter the social and political landscapes in unprecedented ways. Today, the modern society is living a reality that was foretold three decades ago with technology influencing almost all if not all of human behavior. Rapid technological advancements are affecting the day to day aspects of human life including their social, psychological, and personality aspects of life. From the way people talk, interact, clothe, feed, and lead their lives, it is an undisputed fact that technology can indeed influence the habits and personality of an individual. By drawing reference from current statistics and existing literature, it is easy to conclude that the use of technology and especially social media influences personal habits and personality even without the user noticing.
Social media platforms are increasingly becoming part of human social life and consequently their behaviors and characters. These are platforms that allow people to interact virtually with their friends, peers, colleagues, and people from worlds different from their own. Pando (2019) further analyses the different technologies that have evolved over time and the implications they have had on society. The television set was one of the most impactful technological advancement of the 20th century. One notable change in behavior according to the article was family interaction and how people spent their free time. The television set introduced a new way of interacting with the outside world as it brought about entertainment and replaced such leisure activities as reading. Instead of people interpreting written information, they now became accustomed to interpreting visual information from the television set. The way people interacted for example communicating was also greatly affected as TV programs required moments of silence as one followed the events tentatively requiring moments of silence around them. This phenomenon has been exacerbated by the advent of new technologies such as smart devices that have further changed people’s behaviors.
In the article Pedersen (2024), “Technological Influences on Behavior: Insights and Implications,” the author argues that the digital age has ushered in an era which has changed the way people communicate, interact, and behave. The changes that have taken place in human society were not unprecedented as previous technologies had already introduced changes whose implications had already altered the norms in human society. Social media allowed individuals to connect virtually, creating online communities that exposed them to different aspects of the world. Gone are the days when people used to meet one on one and share lifetime experiences with such conversations are now taking place online. This is having a great impact on the personality of most people as social media influences the perceptions that people have about life. The urge to create superficial online personas through platforms such as Instagram and Facebook have been viewed by Pedersen 2024 as leading to feelings of inadequacy leading to psychological issues. The unreal world of social media may affect the social behavior of an individual as they tend to compare their lives to those of their online community. This has led to people changing their ways of life including their dress codes, feeding habits, and their social networks. For example, social media influencers are known to have an impact on their followers which is one of the reason they are used for purposes such as brand influencing and marketing for companies. However, it is not always that the continued use of social media has a positive impact on the individual.
In the research dubbed “Personality and Social Media Use,” by Correa et al. (2014), the authors note how the web usage has changed over time from a time when people used anonymity in their web usage to now when people are using their actual personas and how this has affected society. On the one hand, the authors note that people have different purposes and are driven by personal intentions to engage with social media. However, things take a different course once they have registered and begin interacting on these platforms. The use of social media increases with each platform that an individual sign into. This exposes users to different forms of content ranging from lifestyles to personal development of individuals that they share a common background and are in their circles as argued by Pedersen (2024). This habit of exploring soci...
