Nursing practitioners in the United States are provided with both professional and ethical requirements prior to enrolment. The requirements are aimed at streamlining the behavior and practice of nurses. Apart from legal provisions, nurses may recite the Hippocratic Oath and the Nightingale Pledge prior to admission in the practice (Nutton, 2004).
The Hippocratic Oath was requires the practitioner to swear with the name of healing gods that they will be adhere to specific ethical standards. From the oath basic nursing requirements are stated. For instance, the oath requires the nurse to develop a proper diet for the patient and ensure they do not suffer while under their care (Nutton, 2004). In addition, the oath also does not view social differences as reason to not provide care for a patient. These provisions are adhered in medical practices. Upon taking the oath nurses are required to ensure there decision making and actions are in line with its provisions. The basic requirement of not to do harm stated in the oath is an important nursing practice requirement (Nutton, 2004).
