Do I Have to Share My Cookies with You?
Chapter 14 of the text examines the ethical principle of Distributive Justice.
Those who seek to address problems caused by ‘Deck Stacking” and unequal distribution of wealth must tackle the problem of exactly how to do that. While many wealthy people practice philanthropy (the desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes), other wealthy people feel they have earned their wealth and intend to keep it to themselves. We will explore this ethical dilemma more next week. For the purposes of this assignment, you will consider the very different views of mandating the distribution of wealth from those that have to those that have not. source..

Part A: Stacked Decks
Calculate each ‘self’s’ salary
Person 1 salary would be $23,000 while person 2 salary would be $59,000.
What type of job category would each ‘self’ be placed in?
The job categories for person 1 would be being an ambulance driver, janitor, taxi driver, telemarketer, retail, receptionist, and security guard. On the other hand, person 2 will qualify for elementary school teacher, school counselor, real estate agent, librarian, editor, and public relations job (United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, 2022). This scenario means that person will be eligible for low cadre professions that do not pay well.
Determine how much money will be left after mandatory living expenses for each ‘self’
Total annual expenses amount to $23472. This means that person 1 will have a deficit of $1472 and have to minimize some of the expenses. Person 2 can cover the expenses and remain with a balance of $35528.
How will these finances impact your children, the next generation?
For person 1, the children will inherit the poverty cycle because they will not be able to attend good schools that will equip them with skills to break the poverty cycle. For person two, he will be able to empower and socialize his children to fit in high-income generating occupations. They will attend good schools, live in posh neighborhoods, and make rich connections that will allow them to get high-paying jobs, making them stay away from poverty.
Share your thoughts about the ethical impact of ‘stacked decks’
Stacked decks create a socialization process that maintains a status quo. It prepares people to fit particular lifestyles and jobs while blocking others. For instance, person 1 cannot become a librarian because they were not nurtured to fit the ethical dimensions of that position. They will not be able to conform to the ethical requirements of such jobs. Therefore, stacked decks create a class system because it nurtures people to fit decision-making organs or social spaces based on their socioeconomic status. The higher the socioeconomic status, the higher the decks, which translates to a promising future. Lower stacked decks mean that the player will only be subordinate in society and will not have the capacity to make decisions that shape organizations and society.
Part B: Distributive Justice
Locate a definition of distributive justice that is your favorite (include the reference)
Distributive justice is the observed neutrality of how incentives and expenses are allocated or shared among participants in a given project. For instance, participants may believe that distributive justice has not been upheld when some staff work extra hours but earn the same compensation as those who did not work overtime. People frequently look to the expected behaviors of their team to assess if distributive justice has been achieved. Distributive justice is achieved only if benefits and expenses are distributed per an establishment's established distributive scale.
Share which fish you consider yourself to be:
I consider myself to be a middle fish. Going to school enlightened me to understand how the justice system works and where I can seek help when I feel that my rights and privileges have been sabotaged. However, seeking justice and getting it is two different things. Being a middle fish means that although I can access justice and succeed in some areas beyond my reach, only the moneyed and people from affluent societies are left to enjoy those benefits while the rest of us are left in the cold.
Do you believe the ethical principle of distributive justice should be followed? Why or why not?
The principle of the justice system should be followed as it will guarantee fairness and equality in society. The principle guarantees that everyone will receive their rightful share of benefits pegged on the amount of effort (Olsaretti, 2020). Thus, it rewards hard work and competence instead of corruption and exploitation. It creates a reward system that benefits all in each group without creating an unfair advantage. Therefore, it makes a sane society by promoting actions that guarantee happiness and the greater good by ensuring everyone gets what is rightfully theirs or placed in their rightful place.
What types of goods would you want placed in your distribution?
The goods I will provide in my distribution include reproductive service...
