Family and Friend's Perception about Gender (Essay Sample)
Gender is the relationship between men and women. Gender is constructed socially
basing on the sexual characteristics of either men or women. Gender is not determined
biologically. Gender varies in perception from different societies, ages, cultures, and norms. This
perception translates to the separation of roles and responsibilities such as households' security,
production, family provision, and the primary needs of a family. This essay gives a different
perception of gender basing on the survey done. The research has been based on friends, family
members, and their ages in relation to an understanding of gender. The criterion followed on
interviewing the two sources on gender has given this essay a different opinion and perception
towards gender and gender roles. These two groups provide their views on gender relations. The
following are observations made on the survey done through interviews.

Introduction

Family members' perception
Family is the smallest fundamental unit of the community and society. It is the primary source of production, thus the backbone of a nation's economy. Many families understand gender differently basing on the roles and responsibilities carried out. An interview carried out. A sample of family members was picked with different ages. Family members of age above thirty years gave their views on perception of gender; this group sees gender on the roles shared between men and women. They understand that both men and women play vital roles in society. This has led to the division of labor as women engage in production and subsistence farming to raise the family's needs. On the other hand, men engage themselves, especially in cash production and other market-oriented activities. Family members below the age of thirty give a different view on gender. This group sees gender as a promotion of women only. The group sees women playing many roles majorly family duties. Being in regular stay with the women, the group view the girl child is become over tasks with the family roles as compared to the boy child
Friends' perception
The interview was done on two groups of friends. Friends of different ages give a different view and understanding of gender. The interview sampled friends of age above fifty and between twenty to fifty years. Fiends above fifty view gender on the basis of wealth and owning of property.
