There lived a greedy and evil woman who only loved her daughter but hated her hardworking stepdaughter. One day, on a freezing morning, she sent her poor stepdaughter to the forest to collect the snowdrops for her stepsister’s birthday. Unfortunately, the month was not favorable for the snowdrops, but the stepmother insisted that she must collect them. The poor girl had no choice but only to walk through the frozen woods. She had walked for several hours before the wind started; after that, the snow began to fell.
When the poor girl came out into a clearing, she saw twelve men, young to old, who were dressed decently. They asked her why she was out in the forest at such a time and during a snowstorm. She explained about her stepmother who had ordered for snowdrops. The men felt sorry and decided to help her.
Among the twelve men, was January was the first one to help her. January was old among them, he took the cane, hit it onto the ground and chanted a spell in that vicinity, that freezing passed out in a span of seconds. He then gave the cane to February, and the same thing happened and gave it to March who made flowers all over the glade. She picked the flowers and put into the basket.
When the poor girl returned home, she narrated the story to her stepmother about what had happened in the forest. The jealousy mother sent her daughter to collect berries and mushroom. She found the twelve men, but she was rude to them and they later turned her down.
A thick snow covered her and tried to safe herself but it was in vain. Her mother tried to safe her too but both died.
The poor daughter lived alone at home happily after the departure of her stepmother and stepsister. In the month of May, she found fresh flowers in her house, in June berries and September best apples. Twelve month visited her occasionally and blessed her abundantly
According to Vladimir, Propp folktales conform almost to a scheme of thirty-one functions. Morphology enables the folklorist to carry a comparative analysis of individual tales and among other multiple tales (Fisseni et al, 2014). In an analysis, Propp noted that in analyzing a simple tale is by differentiating between elements making the folktale. The dramatic personae change but the function and actions do not change. In his study, he found out that the dramatic personae are the foremost phenomenon in the folk tale is who and how one can do the action, is the secondary study. Therefore, functions are the atomic elements in the folktale.
A function is the act of a character, which is, defines from the point of view of its significance from the course of action. In all folktales, function is constant.
