The Grenfell Tower fire remains one of the United Kingdom's worst modern tragedies that killed 72 people. A provisional report by Dr. Niamh Nic Daéid found that the fire started from a Hotpoint fridge-freezer in the fourth floor, flat sixteen (BBC, 2019). An electrical fire expert, Dr. John Duncan Glover, confirmed that the fridge malfunction due to poor crimp connection failed to keep wires gripped tightly. This led to overheating of the wire connector within the compressor relay compartment that burned wire insulation causing a short circuit.
Experts argued that fire spread quickly due to the building's cladding, exterior insulation, and air gaps between that caused the stack effect (BBC, 2019). The cladding consisted of aluminum sheets fused to a polyethylene core. The composite foam sandwich panels used in cladding were more flammable and cheaper, apparently downgraded to save money. The exposed polyethylene material in the cladding melted and dripped as it burned, causing the fire to spread quickly and ignite more fires. The fire doors failed to meet the fire resistance standard of 30 minutes (Cambridge, 2019). The flammable materials used in the double-glazed windows also allowed the fire to spread quickly.
