Essentially, ports are strategic points of convergence between the two geographic areas of freight movement. New and better ports are being established, fully installed with the latest innovations associated with this field. These companies are a huge competition to the already existing old companies. For these old companies to compete with these new ones, a lot of internal and external upgrading and expansion needs to take place. Expansion is done in terms of technology, alliances, technologies, business practices, as well as equipment.
To ensure that these ports stay afloat, they are signing new agreements that bring new ideas to the company. More money is also pumped into the company for investing in infrastructure, buying of new and very sophisticated equipment like mega hub. It uses transshipment to remove shunting, swelling up the handling speed, reducing land area as well as cost per transfer that will attract even more customers thereby revitalizing the business. These old ports should try to buy new equipment like container cranes, with specifications that the current market demands since every single day bigger vessels are coming to the market, due to increased demand for goods. This equipment brings in the idea of hiring more competent employees, who will be working in shifts since these machines are demanding both mentally and physically.
These water vessels are becoming larger and larger day in day out. The fact that this old ports face the challenge of storage space for these containers forces these companies to make significant efforts to ensure that they change the storage space, from the limited ocean harbors, to the extensive facilities mainly found in the inland.
Since storage is an issue, these companies are trying to adapt a scenario whereby, instead of having to store these containers in the warehouses, they will are loaded directly from the vessels straight to their mode of transportation: whether railway or transport tracks. The operation is further improved by use of semi-automated ship to shore cranes, which ensure the service is fast and efficient.
Some countries are privatizing and corporatizing their ports as a way of saving the situation from inevitable failure. This gesture ensures that the private sector invests a lot of funds that are used to modernize the existing outdated and worn out facilities.
