Can happiness be derived from helping others? One of the best ways to lighten ones mood is by helping others. This is because when we help others we make them smile and it makes us happy. Happiness makes us give more, and giving makes us happier, which leads to a greater tendency to give and so on. This effect is consistent across different cultures (Aknin et al, 2010). Choosing to help people is an act most of us do without even thinking about it. The people we help can be our allies, family, colleagues or even strangers. If everyone in the world helped one stranger, all the angels would come together to make the world a better place. We should help people irrespective of their race, color, age or social background.
Scientific studies show that people who have a helping hand live longer. This is because it increases ones satisfaction in life and also increases the feeling of competence. Research shows that people who help others on a regular basis have an improved ability to manage stress and stave off chronic illnesses. Volunteering reduces loneliness and enhances ones social life thus it increases one’s life span. Helping others also has a very strong connection with mental health. Studies have shown that volunteers have fewer symptoms of depression and anxiety and they feel more hopeful. It can serve to distract people from dwelling on their own problems and be grateful for what they have (Lyubomirsky, 2008)
The act of giving can also boosts one’s self esteem. A person who volunteers on a regular basis cultivates more confidence due to the feeling of social connectedness. This is because giving makes one feel fulfilled and rewarded. Volunteering can help one mingle with people of different social background, race or color but share the same principles and value. This creates a bond so imaginable that makes one feel valued.
Most of us think that that helping others is all about giving money to charities or volunteering in local organizations, but no they are a lot of ways in which we can help others irrespective of our social economic status.
