The homeland security developed as a concern from the event that occurred in the month of September, the year 2001 which was caused by the attack conducted by terrorists resulting to massive damage to the country in terms of economy where lives and property was lost. In the attack four planes were hijacked, one crashed, schools closed and towers came down. Man powers became inadequate especially in the hotel. On the same day more than 300 firefighters and 100 policemen died while trying to offer their assistance on the falling world trading centre.
The president of the United States of America saw it important to protect the country against the terrorism and any emerging threats in the 21st century by preparing and planning for emergencies, proper communication, offering education to people and ensuring social capital is provided to the security department which became as the strategy laid by the homeland security to protect their people.
Measures put to control security
The security department could offer education and training to the people on how to respond to attacks quickly. The personnel were properly equipped with the knowledge to offer first aids to the victims whenever an emergency occurred.
There was provision of disaster drills in the cities throughout the whole country. People were informed of mass destructions of weapons, mass vaccination, quick actions to be taken against the car bombs and video and computer simulations.
There was formation of National Incident Management System Capacity Assessment Support Tool (NIMCAST) to tackle the issues in the full National Incident Management System (NIMS) whose main function was to provide coherence and unity in the sectors of government. They came up with the multi-state exercises in order to enhance security in all the states.
They developed strong medium of communication where people were made aware of the attacks, new methods applied by the terrorists and people to comply which the alerts put in place. They were expected to report any foreign items they were not sure of them so that to give pace for the appropriate measures to be taken immediately before the situation might worsen.
Education is one the key aspect the security agency emphasized on, knowledge about terrorism was passed to people to make them aware of the impacts that this attack could cause to them, some of the personnel could be trained so that to offer education to others about terrorism, on the same matter, a series of campaigns were conducted mainly for the same purpose, in the websites the information was shared. Teachers in school could teach their student about the 9/11 and terrorism with its impacts in the country. Truck drivers especially were one of the people who could be victims of these incidents at any time of their long distance travelling, they were provided with knowledge to identify any suspicious items that come across them.
The government was made to provide any kind of support to the people who were drastically affected by this attack by either financially or moral support. Some of the people lost their loved ones; some of the people were victims of the same attack where they were affected by that trauma. The security agency provided counseling to those affected psychologically and also gave them financial support so that to comfort them.
The many organizations were invited to support and individuals who were ready to offer their contribution to recover the loss undergone by the country and the victims of the attack. Sponsors were also welcomed for the same.
