Media performs a significant role in mobilizing people, promoting globalization, increasing awareness of various issues, and supporting the global economy by enhancing global marketing. With increasing globalization, mass media is gradually changing to cut across multiple cultures, namely, cross-cultural media transformation. Although it supports economic and social life, cross-cultural media transformation affects culture negatively by changing the cultural life sphere in various ways. Cross-cultural media transformation destroys cultures by promoting cultural imperialism, hybridization, cross-cultural merging, and expansionalism.
First, since mass media significantly influences people, it promotes cultural imperialism that destroys certain cultures. Mass media enhances globalization which in turn encourages the dominance of specific cultures, weakening the traditions of local cultures. Moreover, since globalization and mass media are intertwined, influential and powerful people use the media to control society. They prepare information and political decisions and inject them into society through mass media. This information promotes cultural homogenization and transforms societies weakening their cultures (Nag, 2019). For instance, the dominance of western media, which emphasizes individualism, is destroying the culture of strong connections with one another in different areas across the globe. Therefore, cross-cultural media transformation emphasizes the dominance of one culture, destroying other non-dominant cultures.
Second, cultural media transformation crashes unique cultures by promoting cross-cultural merges. It facilitates this destruction by popularizing different trends globally. Social networks and online media sites can make things go viral and spread to previously isolated areas. However, as these trends spread worldwide, they promote the assimilation of several cultural and social groups, implying that they integrate many people globally (Aririguzoh, 2022). This tendency eventually leads all people worldwide to global cultural assimilation destroying unique cultures.
Third, cross-cultural media transformation destroys cultures by promoting cultural hybridization. Mass media promotes mixing different cultural elements by ensuring that several cultures come into contact with one another faster. However, they create new cultural components as they mingle. For instance, the media promoted mixing American music with traditional West African rap music, resulting in a new genre identified as Hip Hop. However, with time, most Americans shifted completely to this combination, abandoning their cultures. Consequently, cross-cultural media transformation endorses the hybridization of cultures which destroys cultures.
