“I think, therefore I am”
Almost everyone has heard about Descartes and his influence in the development and understanding of Modern Philosophy. In his writing, “I think, therefore I am”, shows the existence of personality and self beyond doubt. Rene Descartes based his writing on the fact that the ability to think of other things is real; hence, one cannot fake his thinking or ability to think. Critical thinking leads to radical doubt in the existence of objects and other elements in the surrounding. Therefore, it may be a mistake, deception, or imagination. Descartes’ philosophy received approval as well as criticism from other philosophers because there were other factors that determined the existence of objects. Consequently, I do not think his statement, “I think, therefore I am”, is entirely true on its own.
Philosophers and critical thinkers have doubted the existence of various objects in the real world because of the inability to understand other factors that determine such existence. Rene Descartes assertion shows that it is not possible to fake thinking about the real world. If one has the ability to think, then that is a clear indication that he/she exists (Descartes, 2012). He understood that if an object or a thing is doubted, its existence should be rejected (Descartes, 2012). It is possible to reject some objects that exist from self-evident reasoning, according to Descartes. Consequently, the fact about rejecting the assertion is undeniable.
Personally, I feel Descartes was not right in his entire assertion. Despite many people not willing to challenge his position concerning his stance, it is worth understanding that it is not a matter of intelligence or knowledge only; indeed, it entails experiences in the real world as well as the surrounding objects. One cannot base the understanding of the objects around and in the world entirely on the ability to doubt, to ponder, or even to question. This is so since, according to Descartes, he exists because he can think about other things (Perisho, 2008). Some objects that exist do not have the ability to think, maybe because they are non-living. Therefore, such assertion may be misleading or deceiving when considered entirely without considering other schools of thought.
One of the first mistakes made by Descartes is in the form of tautological contradiction evident in the quote. In showing the existence of an object or an individual, he bases all the facts on thinking as an essential element. Maybe it is through the usage of words that brings out the contradiction in the argument. Thinking about objects is real, one cannot elude it, and up to that explanation, Descartes is right. However, he makes an error when he tries to bring himself in the equation (Descartes, 2012). Language is an essential instrument that governs what people say, and on the other hand, human beings are the agents of the language.
In conclusion, the assertion by Rene Descartes...
