Infertility is referred to as the inability of a couple to either conceive a child or carry a pregnancy until the right time of delivery. It is one of the severe issues that a couple can face because it impacts their social, financial, intimacy, social, cultural and physical life.
According to Menning (2008), Couples incur a lot of financial costs in trying to treat infertility. Some of these expenses include ovulation stimulation drugs, ultra sound scanning, medical consultations, and laboratory and embryology services. Also, other costs may include hospital charges and medical procedure costs such as embryo transfer and oocyte retrieval.
Infertility causes loneliness and confusion, and that is why the recovery process requires both medical and mental health treatment procedures (Menning, 2008). The health disorder leads to emotion strain on couples and individuals close to them such as family and friends. After being diagnosed with infertility, couples go through a series of intense emotions. Feelings of betrayal, loss, anger, and sadness are also common for these couples. Depression may be associated with the sorrow that the couple feels after imagining the kind of experiences a child could have given them.
