The future of nursing was promulgated first in the year 2010 before which thirty-six percent of the nurses who entered the field had a baccalaureate degree in the field. According to the program, the main aim was to increase the percentage of nurses from fifty percent as of 2010 to eighty percent as expected in the year 2020 (Lane & Kohlenberg, 2010). This is attributed to the increased complexity of care which requires nurses to adapt to advanced technology to facilitate proper synthesis and analysis of information relative to making critical decisions. Thus, this offers a beneficial ground in my pursuit of a baccalaureate degree in nursing and in correspondence to the IOM recommendation for a minimum qualification with the same certification in regards to increasing their set threshold as of the year 2020. Furthermore, this will help me in having the necessary skills to meet the needs of patients, advance my horizons relative to science, and in offering insights into my prospects of functioning as a leader (Lane & Kohlenberg, 2010).
Conversely, IOM seeks to double the number of Ph.D. holders as of the year 2020. This has program has been emulated in various top Universities that offer nursing. The John Hopkins University, for example, has offered 100% funding to full-time Ph.D. students for the first two years of their study (Leach, 2008). This is geared to facilitate the enrollment of more students to attain the set goal by IOM. In correspondence to the above statements, I plan to further my studies to the doctorate level to correspond with IOM’s vision. This equips me with the necessary knowledge to make a difference in the field of nursing relative to my approach to research. Also, it seeks to improve my research skills beyond theoretical background in nursing (Stein, 2011). Likewise, my trudge towards a doctorate program will give me a proper orientation to collaborative relationships in the clinical program as well as an increased satisfaction in my field of study.
NCQAC, which stands for Nursing Care Quality Assurance Commission is vested with the function of looking into the qualifications of nurses. According to the body, continuing nursing education refers to the augmentation of skills, judgment, and knowledge of nurses beyond their initial licensure (Lane & Kohlenberg, 2010). This is with the aim of enriching nurses with relevant dexterity to offering quality health care. Moreover, it is a view of professional growth and development of nurses. Equally, it correlates with IOM’s sixth recommendation of nurses’ lifelong learning. The ever increasing diversity in the various fields of learning is another justifiable reason for imparting oneself with furthering their spheres of knowledge. This is with respect to the changing setting of the global work environment.
