Is There Social Equality for Men and Women in The U.S. Society?
Virtually, one may say that there is social equality for men and women in the U.S. society because all people have equal status, liberties, civil rights and freedom of speech, as well as property rights. However, in a pragmatic approach, there is no social equality especially when we compare disparities that exist in the U.S. societies between men and women in terms of their employment rate, equality in the level of education attained, earnings and political representations ratios.
The absence of social equality can be seen in civil representations in the U.S. societies where there are many men than women in political offices. Despite having the first female Vice President in the U.S., the number of women in the Senate is only 24 out of the 100 senators which indicates that men have more access to political offices as compared to women CITATION CAW21 \l 1033 (CAWP, 2021). Similarly, a comparison of employment rate between men and women records many employed men than women. Though England, Levine and Mishel (2020) indicated that between 2000 and 2018, the U.S. economy reported women’s employment rate at 73%, they also noted that men’s employment rate remains high at 79%. In terms of level of education, women are highly educated than men because of the existence of many programs targeting the elevation of women’s education level. Statistically, the number of women with PhDs and other post-graduate studies have surpassed those of men which is contributed by high access of funds meant to support women’s education.
As result, the disparity in education attainment between men and women is a justification of lack of social equali
