In “More Than 200 Employees of Two Airlines Facing Furloughs at Pittsburgh International Airport” Mark Belko states that the devastating impact of COVID-19 could result in the temporary layoff of close to 250 employees from two airlines in Pittsburgh International Airport. This is part of the planned system-wide layoff of a total of 38,500 that the two airlines (Republic Airways and United Airlines) are contemplating to carry out, all due to the reduction in travel demand brought about by the pandemic (Belko, 2019). A large number of those that may be laid off include flight attendants, pilots and maintenance technicians. The pandemic has reduced the operations at the two airlines leading to a reduction in the number of daily departures, a situation that is expected to remain the same and decrease in winter and fall months.
