Backchannels BICS / CALP
BICS and CALP are terminologies that are commonly applied in the discussion of bilingual education. BICS describes the development of conversational fluency in a second language whereas; CALP refers to the application of language in a de-contextualized academic setting. Most often, BICS takes place in the existence of a contextual academic setting the focus on language delivery. Before BICS is fully developed, learners go through a period where they can communicate orally using a new language. CALP is mainly required in school-based learning where learners operate well within their personal and social settings.
Bilingual education pidgins versus Creole languages
Creole speakers experience some educational disadvantages in schools that teach using the standard language of their region. On the other hand, Pidgin is an important part of Local Hawaiian identity and a distinct Creole language. By definition, pidgins is a language only as a second language whereas research on Creole English demonstrates that it applies discourse strategies and participation structures, which increase reading achievement and development of standard English.
