Video cameras are becoming common in contemporary society, mainly due to an increase in terrorism and criminal activities. Nonetheless, the use of sophisticated systems by the police as well as the security officials, has become a point of concern. Although many people believe that video cameras are likely to foster transparency in law enforcement and curb crimes in society, there is fear that such an invention is likely to cut into people’s privacy. Notably, this paper will carefully discuss in support that law enforcement cameras are an invasion of privacy.
Firstly, there is a lack of control as well as limits on law enforcement cameras. With the advancement in technology every day, surveillance cameras are likely to advance too. Consequently, this creates fear among individuals due to a lack of limit or clear boundaries on what the cameras should do. In this light, countries such as the USA has set up strict rules that regulate video search by security officers (Penney). Nonetheless, there are no legal rules that protect people or limit privacy invasion against abuse of video cameras systems (Kawamoto). For instance, people have raised concerns about the use of surveillance cameras on facial recognition across the United States (Penney). Therefore, law enforcement cameras can invade people’s privacy if there are no clear boundaries.
Secondly, law enforcement cameras are susceptible to abuse. Notably, institutional violation, particularly in times of conflict and social unrest over government policies, is likely to expose surveillance cameras under threat. Accordingly, bad policies can sometimes lead to abusive ends in societal settings. For instance, security officers can take advantage of surveillance cameras to spy and conduct unlawful activities on individuals who tend to oppose government policies (Kiger). Moreover, security officers can use drones to carry surveillance cameras when spying at people’s privacy.
