Introduction
Waste management event refers to the process of carrying out collection, transportation, and disposal of waste products, garbage and sewage waste. Management of waste products also involves treating solid waste as well as offering a variety of solutions for recycling waste materials that do not decay faster, (SIU Carbondale 2017). Waste recycling is very important in terms of illustrating how garbage is re-used as a valuable resource. Even though, waste management is broad, this project lays more emphasis on solid waste and sewerage management since these types of waste affect the environment in a big way.
Background
In general, Waste Management is the discipline which aims at controlling the creation of wastes, their storage, how wastes can be collected, transported as well as disposal of such waste materials. It promotes handling of wastes in a way that addresses environmental conservation aspect, public health, aesthetic, economics and other environmental considerations. Moreover, waste management includes planning, administrative, financial, legal systems among other functions. Wastes management can result to complex solutions which are based on the inter-disciplinary relations between fields like public health, geography, communication and conservation in the midst of others, (SIU Carbondale 2017).
Solid waste management is therefore, regarded as an important aspect of environmental hygiene, (SIU Carbondale 2017). It thus, needs to be integrated with overall environmental planning. Solid waste storage, ways of collection, their transfer, waste treatment and waste disposal can lead to short term risks. However, in the long run, there can arise dangers mainly from the chemical pollution of water supplies. The problems are said to be linked with refuse storage in buildings. In addition, the problems may be associated with human health and aquatic systems. Furthermore, the waste management project is important in essence that proper solid waste management curbs visual pollution. Visual pollution that occurs as a result of piling up of solid waste is offending and unpleasant to the sight. Unless solid waste is managed properly, waste pile hence attracts scavengers which consequently cause unhygienic scene.
Sanitary land filling is also an essential waste management method that this project will adopt. Landfill is an earthen pit, excavated for controlling environmental pollution at an appropriate and acceptable level. Landfill is important in burying the chemical waste composition so that they do not pose threat to the environment or public health. Landfills are usually hot erogenous and are more often made up of cells which can segregate known volume of waste. Landfill when properly executed, is very safe and a cheaper method.
Another proposed method of waste management is the incineration of solid wastes. This method tends to be very expensive since the incineration plants tend to be among the most expensive solid waste management options. In addition, they require highly skilled personnel to maintain them. However, incineration is a very efficient way of reducing the waste volume and the demand for landfill space. In most cases incineration plants are located close to the center of gravity of waste generation and this contributes towards reducing the cost of transporting wastes. In addition, these waste disposal alternatives at the end decompose organic materials into simpler carbon molecules, wastes being broken into carbon dioxide and methane. Incineration therefore, offers the best way to do away with methane gas emissions from waste management processes since it provides a substitute for fossil fuel combustion. The most attractive and interesting features of incineration process is that it can reduce the original volume of combustibles by 80 to 95 percent.
Objective of Waste Management Event Project
The most important goal of solid waste management is to reduce and eliminate the adverse effects of solid waste materials on public and human health. This helps in supporting the economic development as well as supporting the superior quality of life, (SIU Carbondale 2017). Furthermore, the waste management event project aims at establishing a solid waste management system and to provide schedules for environmental management activities. This can successfully be accomplished by in cooperating related environmental education programs at Southern Illinois University that contribute more towards creation of awareness on the need to conserve and protect the University environment. Waste management project also plays a key role in revealing the benefits accrued to efficient waste management. Additionally, waste management focuses at ensuring legal environmental compliance, reducing the amount of wastes created and its associated emissions as well as to ensuring that students and staff are trained to handle waste correctly, including clinical and hazardous waste within the university.
Justification for Waste Management Event Project
Solid wastes are commonly known to have an effect not only on human health ,but also in affecting the environment aesthetic value. In order to curb these problems, waste Management & Recycling project events are very key since they can support the campus goal to drastically reduce the amount of materials discharged into the waste stream. For instance, at Southern Illinois, there are more than 1,000 recycling bins on campus where paper, plastic, and aluminum cans, as well as a newspaper and cardboard drop-off location can be placed for ease of collections. Through waste management project event, garbage collected can be subjected to daily recycling routes in addition to its regular trash routes. However, the event helps in giving guidance how trash can be compacted and shipped to a landfill. In contrary, project promotes recycling of garbage collected from campus. This is achieved by first sorting wastes manually and depositing it in storage bins, then compress into large bales. Waste Management & Recycling helps protect and conserve the environment by selling recyclable materials to various companies.
Recommendation
The Southern Illinois University plays a vital role in waste management activities. It has a well established Sustainability Council, which works around the clock to ensure that waste management projects remain impactful in enhancing protection, conservat...
