Whereas the attendance of lectures is essential, making the practice mandatory attracts much debate. Quite often, students crash with lecturers about the deduction of grades for failing to attend some classes. Some instructors also award marks for class attendance. Most colleges also have strict policies regarding minimum class attendance. These policies have caused great controversies. Supporters of mandatory lectures argue that it improves the participation of students in classes. It also instills discipline among students and fosters better performance in examinations. Opponents of compulsory attendance of lectures argue that it violates the freedom of adults. They also claim that it is unfair since it leads to lower grades. Mandatory class attendance is necessary since it instills discipline, ensures that students get a high level of facilitation, and increases academic achievement.
Some people allege that mandatory attendance of classes is unfair since it leads to lower grades. Most educational institutions deduct points as a disciplinary measure to discourage absenteeism. There can be many factors that can cause absenteeism of students from class for example long distance, high traveling cost, transportation issue, or other personal or professional engagements. This argument is fairly understood; however, a certain percentage of mandatory attendance is for the benefit of students. A question poses itself; how will students learn and develop if they do not attend? When attending lectures, student not only learn new information, but they discuss, interact, and learn many necessary skills for their development as future professionals. Moreover, the issue related to mandatory attendance can be solved if students learn to manage their time. It is important that students learn more about management and organization, so they would be able to manage all of their activities on time.
