Pornography denotes non-relational sex that does not require any relational intimacy. Pornography has existed in all cultures and civilizations (Chadwick et al. 1853). As such, how the media portrays pornography is essential in understanding this aspect of human behavior. Research studies concerning addictive sexual behaviors online incorporate the different constructs surrounding compulsive sexual conduct and its repercussions. Critics and legislators in different cultures and countries assert that the media constructs pornography in a way that makes it look attractive to individuals who may be suffering from compulsive sexual behaviors (Chadwick et al. 1853). Excess viewing of pornography is linked to psychiatric comorbidities that include depression, anxiety, and sexual dysfunction of affected individuals in severe cases. This essay aims to discuss the media representation of pornography and the mental effects of those who are active in the industry in question.
Media Representation of Pornography
Pornography and violence are some of the most controversial topics in mass media. This is because of their role in the proliferation and acceptance of the two vices. Most of the media programs have themes revolving around the aspects of violence, action, and overt sexual content. While research into the effects of sexual materials remains unclear, the media is considered a central point of propagation of the phenomenon. This comes about especially through mass and social media in both advancing and demonstrating that overt sexual content can be accessed and viewed, even without considering its effects on viewers (Vitorino et al. 303). Research differentiates between erotica focused on sexual stimulation but not demeaning, and pornography that is stimulation and intended to demean the characters in such content.
Again, the media portrays pornography in softcore content which entails not making explicit displays of sexual activity and the genitals or hardcore where there is a direct display of the genitals and sexual activity. The implication is that the media remains a core way of showing pornography and associated content and by what means people perceive it. The media, through its content, displays sexual activities as part of everyday life where there are violent encounters among screen players.
