So, what do polarized sunglasses actually do?
What kind of sunglasses do you wear?
Until recently, I was a standard designer sunglasses man, but a friend recommended I try wearing polarized sunglasses. I hadn’t worn them before and I thought I’d give them a try as I’d heard good things about them so thought they worth worth a try.
When I put them on, I couldn’t believe what I saw!
My vision was clearer and objects appeared to be more defined. There was no glare from the sun whatsoever. In fact this reduction in glare could well have saved my life...
A few years ago, I was on holiday in the beautiful island of Bali. Bali is a lovely place, the people are friendly, the food is delicious and the sun is always shining.
I’d recently got my new polarized sunglasses and was keen to test them out. What a perfect place to wear them.
While I was in Bali, I’d decided I’d rent a car out with my partner so we could get around quicker and stop and see sights wherever we pleased.
Now if you’ve ever driven in that part of the world, you’d probably agree that the roads aren’t as safe as the ones you have at home. With the lack of traffic lights, road signs and hundreds, if not thousands of motor cyclists, you need to be fully aware and have all your senses sharp to make sure you stay safe.
With the sun glaring in my eyes, I might not have seen the two motor cycles pull out on me and I’d have had to swerve out the way, potentially crashing into a nearby wall.
Luckily, I had my polarized lenses on, so I was able to see them easily in the low evening sun and react accordingly (turns out that hand gesture is universal!)
If you’ve been shopping around for a new pair of designer sunglasses, you’ve probably come across polarized sunglasses or polarized lenses and thought “what do they actually do?”
Well, polarized sunglasses work by blocking “horizontal light” from reaching your eyes. Why would you want to block this? Because the horizontal light can put you at risk of headaches, eye fatigue and even temporary blindness. Temporary blindness itself can lead to further issues like car accidents, boat accidents or dropping a tray of drinks because you bumped into someone on the way back from the bar.
Polarized lenses block the horizontal light as it passes through the “vertically oriented polarized filters” and as a result, you’ll be able to see a much clearer and sharper image through polarized lenses than through normal designer sunglasses.
These polarized lenses are especially good if you like sports. Polarized sunglasses were actually popularised by boaters and fisherman who used them to reduce the glare from the water while they were fishing, but their use has spread to other outdoor sports such as cycling, golf, jogging and more.
By wearing polarized lenses during sports, you’ll be able to play a much clearer and more focused game (especially golf) and you’ll be much safer while jogging and cycling as you’ll have no sun glare in your eyes.
Polarized lenses are a really safe option for driving, as I mentioned above. If you’ve ever driven in a foreign country, you’ll know how difficult it can be, especially when the sun is glaring in your eyes. Studies have shown that drivers who wear polarized sunglasses stop faster when faced with a sudden obstacle than drivers who are just wearing normal sunglasses. Because polarized sunglasses remove this glare, you’ll be able to see the road and other road users more clearly, meaning you and your family will be safer. It also means you’ll be able to find t...
