My dream school of the future
Today, technology has been cited to form an indispensable part of human life. This has attributed to the advanced use and real-life application of advanced technologies in almost every phase of human life, including schooling and education. Looking forward, the future school model will foreseeably map today’s advanced and ever advancing computing technology into every activity. Visualizing the concept, all schools will forcibly adopt the smart-school model where content digitization and connectivity to big-data and an internet of things will form the operational bedrock. It’s in respect that the preceding sections of this paper explore the future school model.
With the concept of ‘smart schools’ readily implemented in various countries across the globe; especially Malaysia and the USA, its impetus presents an immense opportunity on what the future school model will encompass. And as simulated research findings have implicated, only schools subscribing to the scalable digital schooling platform will survive (Hawawini 2005). In the model, prospective mapping of today’s schooling technologies indicate a possible fully digital school system where learning and teaching is digitally broadcast. Resultantly, the expanded cyberspace learning platform will lead to corresponding contraction in the present day workforce deployment in schools (Riedel 2014). However, as well-on-course researches indicate learning and teaching in the new platform will entail coding learning materials into digital content and video.
Apart from digital content broadcasting, Riedel (2014) alludes that the future school will also be run on a large network of high-speed cable and broadband internet. Through the internet connectivity, learners and teachers alike will have a flexibly transmit, share and evaluate learning materials. Besides, the learning and teaching fraternity will be greatly enriched with both software and hardware capabilities through the 4th and even possibly 5th and 6th generation internet connectivity through smart devices. As a result, cloud computing and other and other user-friendly and more effective technologies will become a reality in education (Cornuel 2007).
Lastly, the future school model will foreseeably involve a novelty of advanced technologically developed learning, teaching and research tools (Riedel 2014). These will include both online and offline learning platforms with an allowance for flexible cross-platform interchange. As Stylianides and Pashiardis (2007) note, both the learners and teachers will thus, be empowered to effectively manage the available educational resources while exploiting all the accessible learning and teaching resources. According to Hawawini (2005), it’s the integrated leaning approach that will allow for optimal realization of educational goals.
Despite the highly prospective blueprint of the future school model, a robust infrastructure and advanced IT facility deployment will be required. However, as Hamid (2011) reports, the challenge is likely to adversely affect less developed economies while best being easily deployed in mature democracies. Additionally, all economies – whether developing or matured, will require equally effective strategies of managing and administering education and learning curricula. Resultantly, the curricula will have to be developed in line with the available technological facilities for optimal use of the available resources.
