Throughout history, there have been great political figures around the world but my favorite is Nelson Mandela. This international hero had a long-standing dedication to human rights (Doeden, 2014). Leading the anti-apartheid movement in South Africa, the late Mandela fought against racial oppression with minimal violence. He believed in doing what’s right in spite of the repercussions of his actions (Mandela, 2008). It didn’t matter what came against Mandela: his passion remained steadfast even in prison. Evidently, Nelson Mandela is the best example of a selfless political leader who seeks the best interests of his people.
For more than six decades, Mandela committed his life to the service of humanity. He wasn’t just a human rights lawyer: he was also a prisoner of conscience (Doeden, 2014). That’s why the Nelson Mandela Foundation celebrates his birthday every 18th of July with a devotion to 67 minutes of helping others. This special day is widely recognized as the United Nations leaders also join in the celebrations yearly (Doeden, 2014). Moreover, several human rights defenders draw strength from the beliefs of Mandela whenever they stand up for those who have suffered arbitrary detention or denial of a fair trial, as well as, the oppressed and prejudiced. From these facts, it’s clear that Mandela’s strong dedication to human rights lives on to inspire many even after his death.
