Myths and legends exists in many communities, most of them shaping the customs and practices that specific group follow. These practices are sometimes oppressive to certain age group brackets and sometimes to an extent of crossing over to gender issues. For example Native American myths and legends have indicated that women and nature have an intimate relationship with nature. The novel ‘So far from God’ has indicated how women have been bound by the nature. Latin America magical realism has been clearly shown by anti-Cartesian vision which is one of the major cosmology that has governed the novel. Women are solution to the society problems and also they are human with concrete stand that cannot be changed with ease. This analysis shows how earth binding consciousness on women has been exemplified from the start of the novel to the end.
Women have been degraded and a perception that they can easily be exploited have been taken as a fact of life. The principal characters Loca, Sofi, Caridad and Felicia have been relating to the nature that depicts the world views of native America. The perception that women and nature have a relationship is empowering women rather than degrading them. The women and nature relationship is a resource for spiritual feminism and feminist environmentalism (Sturgeon 264). Women closeness and interactions with nature has been depicted where Sofi is trying to understand the animals’ warnings about her child condition (Castillo, 22). Before the death of Sofis child animals could show some characteristics that she could not understand. The animal’s behavior and their characteristics could show that everything was not well, however she could not understand the communication. The dogs, cats and other animals were moving in the sense that indicated that something was wrong (Castillo, 19). This an implication that animals are more sensitive to issues of nature than human being (Castillo, 37). A series of events that occurred between the animals and Sofi’s family indicates that animals also take miracles like human beings do (Castillo, 33).
People should accept others decision of living. Loca and her sister Fe are sailing in a different boat.her sister is among the group that has been degrading the womens that have an association with animals. Loca has been seeking community in the natural setting instead of human society. She opt to choose a simple life and perceive nature as her major companion. She fits well in the non-human society in that even the dogs and cat can sympathize with her when she is in a melancholic mood (Castillo, 38). In centrally Fe her sister is always clean and she has been keeping her hair and nails neat. She does not at all associate with animals. She is also subscribed to a vision that degrade women connected with nature. Fe views are that her family have deceived have and she concludes that her sister Loca is retarded. This perception is quite different on the side of Sofi, Loca, Caridad, and Felicia. They perceive the bond as intelligence.
Some one choice of living should be respected. Forceful change of someone way of living always cause a distress to the victim. The person in question has to be allowed to live in his or her own way. Every person has a reason for his or her decision as long he/she made the decision in his/her conscience. The fact has been illustrated in the novel when men forcefully try to take Caridad away from her mountain home. She does not take her environs as something that is different from her. She is not willing to move with the men as in her perception the environment is in her and her help can come from her home, that why she decides to seek refuge to the inner part of the cave where the pilgrims could not find her (Castillo, 90).
Women are spiritual healers to the community because most of the miracles that most communities and families experience are contributed by women participating on spiritual services. The protagonist daughter resurrection has not been doubted by neither the narrator nor the characters. The same case happens when Fe and Caridad are healed in an extraordinary way. The book has well described the magic and the dogma behind the scene (Castillo, 22-23). The miracle is ...
