Ocean warming and acidification are primarily brought on by human activities, adversely impacting ecosystems such as the Great Barrier Reef, a habitat for countless living organisms. Air pollution, such as carbon dioxide stemming from human activities, requires mitigating increased levels of ocean warming and acidification that has adverse results on human beings and other living organisms. This essay will explore how group thinking and visceral learning offer important mitigation measures to address Michell’s discussion regarding ocean warming and acidification.
The great barrier reef is one of the most important ecosystems for living organisms and an excellent example of the devastating impact of increased air pollution that results in acidification and ocean warming. Mitchell highlights how integral the ocean is since it provides life and enables humans and living organisms to act as the planets main life-support system. The ocean is described as the point where all life began with a complex system that can only be grasped by human beings through focusing on simpler proxies (Mitchell, 2009, p.26). The ocean offers a bounty of resources such as nutrients and resources that helps plant life and bacteria to thrive. Increased air and water pollution result in warmer ocean temperature and acidification that threatens living organisms that depend on the ocean for survival. Reefs with high coral cover, such as the great barrier reef, are being destroyed. An enhanced effort is required to safeguard the ocean and habitats to match that of Turtle Bay reef, which does not have any signs of degradation (Mitchell, 2009, p.31). The leading culprit behind increased acidity in oceans is carbon dioxide; therefore, there is an underlying need to reduce carbon emissions such as carbon dioxide to preserve the environment curbing the threat posed by acidification and ocean warming.
