Personal Philosophy of Nursing Practice
Introduction
Improving patient care is at the heart of every nursing philosophy. Humans are complicated bundles of chemicals, electrical charges, and life-sustaining energies that have one thing in common: we all have bodily, social, and emotional needs that must be met for us to function. The nursing approach goes above and beyond typical healthcare delivery methods. In addition to biological, mental, and spiritual aspects of health, it considers each patient's circumstances.
Part 1
Apply recommended elements of a philosophy statement: Sister Callista Roy’s adaptation theory & providing holistic patient-centered care
A patient-centered nursing practice focuses on treating patients as individuals by providing compassionate, holistic, and psycho-emotional care. Adaptation theory is a cornerstone of this evidence-based practice in the healthcare arena. Studies indicate that nursing care can act as catalysts for improved patient health. However, "patient-centered" represents more than just shared decision-making and collaboration between healthcare providers. Patient-centered care empowers the patient to take an active role in their treatment plan and ongoing health management. An essential component of forming a positive therapeutic relationship is providing an environment conducive to healing (Watson and Spear). According to Roy (2015), humans are genetically predisposed to adapt through stimulus and response. Adaptation is a continual adjustment process in response to changes or stimuli. Although each person has a unique biopsychosocial model, they all possess the same ability to adapt naturally to their environment (Roy, 2015). The four main components of adaptation theory are person, health, environment, and nursing. The personal construct is self-determined by their perception of reality, experiences with others, life experiences, and interactions with their physical surroundings.
Explain how your philosophy can accommodate your expanded awareness of practice issues as a DNP
Nursing is a dynamic profession that requires nurses to make decisions and act according to the needs of their patients. Numerous models can be used in practice, addressing different issues and concerns (McEwen & Wills, 2019). The adaptation model of nursing created by Roy is one that I believe will benefit my DNP education because it sets forth three nursing processes that nurses use to ensure patient needs are met (Gonzalo, 2021). These processes include problem identification, goal setting, and interventions meant to change the issue. The adaptation model focuses on how the environment impacts the patient and how the patient adapts or works to change such environmental conditions (Gonzalo, 2021). The adaptive nature of this model allows me to expand my awareness as a patient advocate while allowing me to effectively care for my
