Poetry Analysis 
The poem “Three Kinds of Pleasures” is one of many poems written by Robert Bly in his book “Silence in the Snowy Fields”. This poem gives an array of insights to any reader. The aim of this composition is to identify the main objective of the poet, discusses any relevant issues in the course and try explaining the poem in detail. By doing this, the essay will shed more  light as to the writer’s state of mind and intentions  in writing this short yet inspiring piece of work. This particular poem mentions particular places. This means the writer in one way or another has experienced the feel of these places. Having this experience, his poem speaks better to the emotions of people who have lived in any of these places or similar parts.
“Three Kinds of Pleasures” is a poem about travelers by road through the rural American Midwest. The drivers or passengers see among other things the features presented by the Midwest landscape; the extensive land, older telephone poles and the cornfields. The travelers seem to go on all through to the better part of the evening. Darkness starts to creep onto the already harvested fields. Total darkness still at bay the travelers seem to still enjoy the illusions created by the brownish stubbles, stiff weeds and scattered trees. The riders are equally overwhelmed riding into the artificial yet magnificent evening Chicago lighting, and still manage to take notice of leafless trees, alongside half full ditches filled of private  snow along the road.
Robert Bly in this poem puts into perspective the view of a driver or passenger in a motor vehicle. This site is one of the plains and the rich geographical features, presented by the landscape as one traverses into, about and out of the rural Midwest. The poem creates a very clear picture of the relaxing feeling derived from the experience. To appreciate How this feeling is expressed in the poem, certain deliberately and descriptive words throughout the poem are used by the poet. How the telephone poles… slowly leap on the gray sky… the snowy fields… (Bly 11) such words in context help the reader in visualizing the divers and full effect giving them the sense of an extensive land that is pleasant and attractive in a rural Midwest setting.
Coupled with the serene and relaxed mood of this poem, Change presents itself as one of the key themes. Change in this poem seems to bring joy and pleasure to those in the poem. It appears to be a comparative poem where change, mobility and culture feature. The fact that the poet chose to mention Chicago having visible lighting, is a comparative indicator of better facilities and access to modern benefits. The poem shows and presents different cultures with each different setting. In the Wisconsin and Illinois the cultural setting is more relaxed, as compared to the Chicago. The Chicago setting appears in a way to create an uptight kind of culture.  It is good to note the wordings by the poet and the idea they bring. The words “Privatized snow” (Bly 11) Shows a stringent logic in Chicago’s culture. Environmental changes are highlighted; trees in the Chicago are depicted as being much weaker and leafless. This could be an approach of saying, that harsh conditions will be experienced in Chicago. Similarly, the leaflessness could be a direct result of the different cultural practice where people from Chicago don’t care about the well being of plants.
