Problems of Emigration to Emigrants and Host Countries
The recent economic downturns and political intolerance among some countries have increased the emigration of people from their homelands to new destinations. Although not a new concept, the high rate of resettlement has prompted policymakers to review the impact of emigration on host nations and the newcomers. Instead of treating emigrants as people who have come to improve economic productivity, countries such as the US are reviewing the immigration rules to reduce the number of fresh settlers. Although migrants help to improve their new countries’ workforce, they take employment opportunities away from the natives and cause budget deficiencies, besides facing cultural shock and discrimination challenges.
Firstly, emigration leads to cultural shock and assimilation challenges. In their study of religious practices among the migrants in the US, Massy and Higgins (2011) found out that settling in other countries might be challenging to the newcomers. Before relocating, most people always have high expectations, hoping that that life will be easier and comfortable. To the contrary, they always find it hard to adapt to the new environments, especially when the two countries are in the extreme opposites in terms of cultural practices. In the US, for example, settlers from the Middle East always find it hard to get assimilated into the daily American lifestyle activities because of their Islamic beliefs, morals, and values.
Secondly, emigration affects the wage rates, paralyzing the employment expectations among the natives. According to Lewis (2017), the most affected population in the host states are the lowly-educated laborers. When highly-skilled and well-trained settlers arrive, they attract the attention of host organizations that are in need of competitive workers to improve their productivity and profitability. In the process, the low-skilled and uneducated native employees will be retrenched to create room for the new recruitment. In the US, for example, there are presently over 40 million newcomers, making up close to 17 percent of the workforce (Lewis, 2017). Without a doubt, emigration can cause tension between the native workers and the new settlers.
Lastly, emigration affects both the host country in terms of budget deficits, the emigrant in terms of facing discrimination. According to Docquier, Ozden, and Peri (2013), the number of immigrants in the US between 1970 and 2013 increased from 5 percent to 15 percent. Because of the increasing needs of the new settlers, the US government has been forced to include them in their expenditure, causing deficits in some sectors. For example, the executive normally allocates a percentage of their resources to sponsor the immigrants’ education. Besides, most scholarship programs in the US favors the immigrants by enrolling them to study medicine and engineering courses. Consequently, the migrants start to face discrimination from the natives leading to isol...
