A response to “Animal Farm” by George Orwell
George Orwell’s “Animal Farm” is a novella about the Russian Revolution. Facts I like about this novella is how Orwell uses animal characters to reflect human behavior. For example, Napoleon is just like Joseph Stalin. He uses military force to consolidate his power and to intimidate the other animals. Snowball is the equal of Leon Trotsky. He is eloquent, passionate, and intelligent as compared to Napoleon. His power is cemented because of his popularity. Squealer spreads propaganda. Just like political leaders, he uses language to manipulate truth and maintain political control. Old Major is used to represent a Russian revolutionary leader, Vladimir Lenin and Karl Marx, who serve as inspiration for change in the society (Bloom p.95).
What I disliked about the book is how the ordinary people are presented as gullible. They never question their leader’s actions and, therefore, promote bad leadership. For example, Boxer represents human beings who are slow-witted. They support an oppressive regime without knowing the effects of bad leadership on a society. Clover, another horse, is in denial about the changes in the commandments that she keeps on blaming herself about her poor memory. Leaders use gullible people to exalt themselves (Bloom p.95).
The writing of this book is connected to the Russian revolution. Orwell wrote it as a reflection of socialist corruption in USSR. It narrates development and emergence of Communism. The rivalry bet...
