Amidst the underlying pantheon of cult films Samurai cop has been able to stand out as one of the greatest films. The movie is deemed a cult classic as with many amazing features in its setting. The movie contains a strange type of innocence with all the characters portraying a silly and ridiculous act during the filming. The movie was able to garner a lot of following with its cult as it’s so good it’s so bad. The movie is an artistic masterpiece whereby the characters are able to give memorable performances as they juggle in-between various pieces in the wrong manner hence bringing out a genuine misguided passion about the movie. The samurai cops scenes are as transparent to viewers as it amazingly pointed out film aspects that did not work out. The so bad its good gives the artistic evaluation of the film in that a line can be drawn between good and bad film and whenever bad films are hailed they tend to turn into masterpieces.
To ascertain that a movie is bad or good several qualities have to be considered. Various factors play a core role in the movie such a spoor quality images, sound and various color time aspects the movie directors are able to shoot the movie within a low budget three week period. The above factors come in to play while drawing the line between bad and good film while looking at their intentional aspect. Ability to practice bad filming tends to form an interpretive competence that values incompetence among a majority of the viewers and key industrial players. Intention weighs in heavily while trying to make the industry and viewers understand the cult of appreciation associated with most bad films. This effectively ensures that the gap between good and bad film is identified.
The Samurai Cop is particularly classified a cult film due to the technical limitations in artistic intentions ever present throughout the movie. The movie fails hilariously in its intention to achieve its aesthetic aims, point in case is where the main actor, Matt Hannon playing Joe Marshall, a police officer has to wear a female wig as he had chopped his hair in the middle of shooting the film. Ironically, it is this seeming failings that make the film especially popular with the fans. It is this incompetence, failure to achieve its aesthetic aims that make the movie so good at being bad. ‘Cinemasochism’, as referred to by Carter Ray David writes that ‘the bad cinema fan finds enjoyment in these films in spite of – or as is often the case, because of – their technical limitations’ (2011: 102) – that is, usually, the failure to accomplish their intended aesthetic aims.
Bad films also differ from the good films in their disability to adhere to the established codes of cinematic representation. Samurai Cop is characterized by outrageous action scenes, poor dialogue scenes and not to mention the horrendous locations and timings of the aforementioned scenes. It is precisely for falling this short of the normal film standards that the film triumphs over its peers in the bad film category. It is mandatory that a movie script is up to par to at least create a normal movie, but in this case the script consists of so many mishaps and unnecessary awkward scenes. For example, there is a fire breakout in the movie which was actually unscripted and the police officers, Marshall and Washington are forced to put it out to save the stuntman. Nevertheless, it is this unintended hilarity created by this film that is responsible for its cult following.
Narrative superfluity, the presence of largely irrelevant content, is a major presence in the Samurai Cop. One such instance in the film is when the two police officers, have a completely random encounter with a nurse who is strangely effeminate. There’s unnecessarily sexist and monologue conversations throughout the movie coupled with amateurish action scenes which are mostly not related to the main plot of the film, which itself is pretty shallow. Convention and coherence are hard to come across in this film characterised by monologue and repetition like in the scene where Joe Marshall keeps shouting ‘shoot! Shoot! Shoot!’ to his partner. It is this lack of fluidity and coherence throughout the film that has made a lot of people appreciate this bad film. For instance taking Marshall’s partner, Washington is forced to do a series of comical facial expressions which needless to say do not serve the intended purpose of getting the audience to develop serious emotion. It however helps us appreciate this ghastly acting portrayed in this film which serve to make it one of the best bad movies.
