There seven distinct ages which classify the history of the English language, all the stages signed internal and external changes. There are histories of interaction between English as well as other languages, both in England and exterior England. The English language went over several stages.
Pre- English period in 450 AD
It is the initial stage; Celtic was a local language in Britain with inhabitants known as Celts. According to (Jane Ra, 2019), the Latin language was made the dominant language of culture and movement by Rome, after the Rome invasion. Most of the Celtics became servants and slaves after being taken into the north and west. Most people in Britain were bilingual since they could comfortably speak two languages, Latin and Celtic.
The early old English(450-850AD)
It is the second stage after Romans have left England. Anglo-Saxon tribes were caked upon to ward off the danger of the Celtics in peripheral areas. The king supported them to stop using the Celtic language. The early old English was introduced. There was moderate Celtic influence since Celts were considered alien and inferior. Welsh came from the old English as a foreigner or servant. Various Germanic dialects were brought by settlers from Europe. Nevertheless, most Latin words originated from invaders.
Later old English (850-1100)
It is the third stage whereby invasion originated from Scandinavian. England had many kingdoms. Until the era of King Alfred, there was no political unified England, king Wessex. The king had arranged for a translation of Latin text into English with one dialect. Scandinavian languages had a lot of effects on grammar. Word order took the inflectional system and became part of standardized English.
Middle English (1100-1450)
It is the fourth stage during the of Norman guest. English was the vernacular rather than being the language of status, Latin was the language of the church, the official language in England was French. It became the language of education and government since it was preferred by the king of England. It was a language of the prestige and elite. It was the language of the governing and ruling classes. The king of England was speaking French as a mother language; therefore, the public was obliged to speak too. It was a language of prestige and noblemen. The English language was influenced by French, many words were borrowed from the French language.
Early modern English (1450-1750)
it is the sixth stage, English spread outside Britain to America, Africa, Australia. It became a means of learning in most various places when Britain was colonizing most nations globally. English became the international language of consumerism and advertising, it has begun as the world language in the 18th century, since it was fashionable in Europe. English became universal not only due to its fashionable status in Europe but also process of geological importance.
Late modern English (1950 to date)
It is the seventh stage; new standard forms of English emerge in independent nations as a result of globalization. It was made an international language of technological communication. It became the political power language. It was now playing a working or official role in events in most international political gatherings. It is the language of technological power.
