Discuss the Similarities and Differences Between Male Sex Offenders, Female Sex Offenders and Juvenile Sex Offenders.
Introduction
The issue of sexual violence among male sex offenders, female sex offenders, as well as juvenile sex offenders remains a very serious social problem with a number of devastating consequences on both the offenders and their victims. Besides, the scarcity in terms of resources within the criminal justice system in the world today persists to impede on the battle against these sexual violence. In addition, the challenge of making today’s societies much safer not only includes the need for resources, but also demands a high and comprehensive understanding of the correct crime patterns as well as risks. This paper seeks to discuss the differences and similarities among the male, female, and juvenile sex offenders. A discussion of how each of these offenders are charged, prosecuted, as well as sentenced will be included.
Similarities and Differences
The three different types of sex offenders including male, female, as well as juvenile offenders can be understood in terms of their similarities and differences across a wide range of aspects. Similarities are those characteristics that make these offenders alike, while differences are those which differentiate them. For instance, in the United States alone, approximately 10,000 women are convicted each year for violent sexual crimes. Moreover, 7 percent of these women represent adults, while 27 percent represent juvenile offenders. A significant number of male offenders are also reported each year in the country’s bureau of justice statistics. But, just how these typologies of sexual offenders are similar or different from one another is subject to investigation, an aspect that motivates this paper in order to unveil the various differences as well as similarities amongst these three groups (Van et al, 2007).
The Similarities
Relationship problems – Both the females, males, as well as juveniles sexual offenders have been found to have a number of difficulties in developing as well as maintaining long-lasting and stable working relationships. In many instances, strong relationships are often build and maintained based on strong assertiveness, confidence, in addition to high levels of communication. Much of the feelings of personal insecurities or inadequacies often undermine one’s ability in order to utilize social skills in addition to negotiating the normal flow of interpersonal relationships. Since many of the female, males, as well as male sexual offenders tend to lack these social skills as well as confidence; their relationships often suffer as many of these offenders tend to find themselves lacking the support and companionship in other people.
Poor coping skills- In a number of cases, the lack of problem solving capacities are also shared females, males, as well as juvenile sexual offenders. Besides, when these groups are faced with challenging scenarios, it is often difficult for these offenders in order to develop strategies that are pertinent to solving problems or minimizing any negative effects that might come their way. Much of the literature about female, juvenile, and male sexual offenders always reveal that they are able to produce fewer options for problem solving as well as that they fewer options that they are able to identify are more likely to be ineffective, or sometimes options that might instead exacerbate on their difficulties.
Cognitive Immaturity and Dissertations –Many of the Juveniles, males, as well as females who often sexually offend are both prone to thinking errors that are related to the victims and themselves. These three groups often tend to regard themselves are victims and to validate their behaviours based on the idea that they are not in accord with the rest of the society. These groups often place the blame on the actual victims as well as describe incidents in such a manner that places responsibilities on the victims as if these victims were in control of the situations. In addition, emotional immaturity is also a very common aspect for these three groups.
Victims Empathy Deficits– None of the males, females, or juvenile sexual offenders depict the ability or capacity in order to understand the harm done to the child as well as adolescent victims of sexual exploitation. It particularly, true with the adult offenders, who depend on their strength in terms of relationships with the young people, in efforts to encourage these young people to keep it as a secret. Since physical strength is hardly involved these three types of groups, the offender always maintain the belief that their victims are consensual and possibly supporting the sexual activity. In addition, the moment the sexual abuse is disclosed, both the female, male, as well as juvenile offenders develop their rationales for the reasons why their victims are no longer keeping the secrets, including as pressures from parents, attention seeking, or sometimes for monetary gains. Besides, the full acceptance of the harm that these offenders have caused is very exceptional among these groups.
The Differences
More Likely To Abuse Younger Children
Even though, there are many females who often target both male and female adolescents, women and adolescent girls are most likely to abuse younger children as compared to their male offender counterparts. In many cases, the typical age of children who are sexually abused by juvenile and female sex offenders is between 3-6 years. In addition, earlier research indicates that female sex offenders are most likely than males to target children who are under the age of eight.
More Deprived in Childhood
Even though, women, juvenile, and males who sexually offend often appear to be brought up in circumstances of both physical as well as emotional deprivation. Factors such as physical negligence, lack of food, poor living conditions, as well as lack of medical care are more common among many of those women who sexually offend.
Abuse More Likely to Happen while Offering Childcare
Unlike their male counterparts who often tend to offend from positions of trust in families and informal relations, many of the female and juvenile sex offenders are more likely to offend while in formal childcare functions including babysitting (Feld, 2009). This difference arises from the greater accessibility, which is accorded to females in childcare roles. In a number of times, females are often screened as well as supervised less as compared to the males, even though they are generally placed in greater access roles, which may include bathing and dressing among many other personal care roles.
Much more disturbing abuse histories occur among female sex offenders
Severe childhood disturbances represent a much more important factor in female offenders as compared to males. Despite the fact that it is intuitively attracting, the strong relationship between childhood abuse as well as future sex offending has not been solidified in research on male offenders. Most of the women who sexually offend have been found to have experienced severe sexual violence in addition to physical abuse. In addition, the childhood experiences of many of the females who offend entail additional elements of severe disturbances including family violence, substance abuse, as well as multiple caregivers.
How Offenders are Charged, Prosecuted, and Sentenced and available treatment opportunities
Juvenile Sex Offenders
Juvenile sex offender are first apprehended and then taken to police, who thereafter present the offender to court for determination. However, the task of managing these cases lies heavily on persecutors, who have the primary responsibility for making decisions concerning the charges. After the charges are filed in courts, decisions are then made in regard whether to detain or release them. The court then takes consideration of a number of factors including the nature as well as severity of the case. When the offenders are later deemed to be suitable for release, necessary bail schedules are put in place. However, when these offenders are deemed unsuitable for release, they are detained and prosecuted just like the adults.
In terms of the available treatment opportunities, there have been tremendous advancements in the treatment of juveniles who sexually offend. Today, there are more than 1,000 treatment programs across the world. Many of these programs have generally adhered to the traditional adult offender models. In addition, standard interventions include teaching the offenders in order to prevent the recurrence of similar acts, empathy training, social and interpersonal skills training, anger management, and sex education in addition to assertiveness training. Treatment programs for juvenile offenders cam is a bit difficult to handle, though, more research into this area is desperately required.
Female Sex Offenders
As compared to juvenile sex offenders, female offenders are charged, prosecuted as well as sentenced highly. Many of these offenders get to offend based on different circumstances as mentioned in the above discussion. When sexual acts committed by females are reported, similar procedures such as those witnessed in juvenile offenders are followed. They are arrested by the law enforcement officers and presented before the court, where they are charged concerning sexual abuse offences.
Usually, the prosecution team is given time to present the evidence that can be used to convict the offender, while at the same time, female offenders can seek the help of lawyers who can help to defend them. When the case has been sufficiently determined and the evidence provided is enough in order to convict one f...
