Introduction
Structuralism is a concept applied in the literature to analyze the structure of society and examine contradicting ideas. It is a philosophical orientation that is used to evaluate the overall structure of the social class. The “Letter to White Queers,” is a poem that explains the implications of structuralism in society. Structuralism can be identified with racism, colonialism, sexism, and ageism among others. Andrea Gibson provides an overview of racism and ethnicity in society.
Structuralism as a Dominant Philosophy
As discussed, structuralism is a mechanism of evaluating and examining the structure of society (Mambrol, 2016). In the poem written by Andrea Gibson, people of color and ethnic groups are being murdered without any intervention from the government. Structuralism has a great impact on social work. Social work is a group of people with different values and beliefs. In other terms, it is a society made with different people with unique values. The poem is aligned with the objective of this paper since it highlights the challenges of people of color and ethnic groups. It is difficult to give an opinion, especially in a place where your values and beliefs are different. “Who are my people? Where is my rage when they are stealing brown and black people’s homes? The poem is a piece of literature and it reflects the implications of the ethnic groups in the community.
The structure of the poem gives a chronological view of the social workers. Additionally, the author continues to highlight some of the issues he encountered in society. For instance, even after complaining about the death of Mike Brown who was murdered by supremacists, people still judge him. It is a fight against racism where the victims are trying to fight off the jaws of the racists. From the real world to social media, racism, colonialism, and sexism seems to take control of every person (Mambrol, 2016). It is crystal clear from the poem that being born from a particular part of the planet or having a different skin color is a disadvantage to other communities. Andrea Gibson is trying to paint the picture of the current situation in the hands of colonialists and racists. “Furious that I could be holding the candlestick of a microphone for this many years and have it burned this far down without shining a hell of a lot more light on the truth of what I know white is (Gibson
