This paper entails that suicide is a serious public health problem that takes an enormous toll on families, friends and relatives as well. In addition, the approach of trying to uncover the reason for an individual suicide death is complex and challenging. Furthermore, this is where the author illustrates on how females tend to commit suicide more as compared to their male counterparts. He shows that Suicide is a very negative entity; this is especially seen among family members as they have to undergo personal social criticism in response to a family member's suicide. Thus, scholars in the book articulate that suicide is underreported due to social stigma (DeSpelder & Strickland, 2010, 44). This is so as DeSpelder and Strickland discussed suicide in its social context. The authors show that family members might at times know the reason for the suicide, but they are still left pondering unanswered questions that inevitably arise.
DeSpelder and Strickland focus on death and dying, and hence they offer a comprehensive, multidisciplinary, state of art coverage and bereavement. This is true as the author handled the subject of suicide exceptionally well, as it relates to the issue of death and dying. The book shows that the Supreme Court affirmed that states can draft policy concerning physician assisted suicide. But is seen that currently, Oregon is the only U.S. State where Physician-assisted suicide is legally allowed. Basing on the fact that suicides are being committed, major steps have to be undertaken in order to avoid more void to the bereaved person (DeSpelder & Strickland, 2010, 69). This is where it is advisable for one to consider writing a will which can be used as a declaration expressing a person's intentions and wishes for the disposition of their property. Use of a will as suggested by the authors is an essential approach by an individual as it will enable the bereaved to avoid issues related to misunderstanding.
Just like any other death, suicide victims are notified at the hospital, the police, coroner, his or her immediate family member's, relatives, friends' and then finally acquaintances as well. This are essential steps that have to be undertaken in order to show what really took place, before the concerned person passed on. Furthermore, it is the objective of families and the community to take care of the funeral for the person who participated in the suicide. This is an approach that has to be offered by an undertaker who acts as a merchant supplying funeral items, and eventually as provider of services. This shows that suicide also comes along with negative perceptions and outcome (DeSpelder & Strickland, 2010, 47). Furthermore, it is an aspect that has to be realized by the society and form groups that can teach families that undergo such entities know how to deal with it. This is what the authors are trying to echo out to the public and the people concerned
