Education is a fundamental part of the growth of a child. It is a process that involves instilling in a child particular qualities and skills that are necessary for a better future. Education moulds a child into a person who is independent and gives him or her the necessary tools for becoming a resourceful member of society.
Exceptional learning is the education of persons who have a uniqueness in sensory, physical, neurological, temperamental, or intellectual capabilities. Exceptional students fall outside the normal range of development and are therefore in need of special education and other related services to enable them to realize their potential (Munger, Murray and Claussen, 2018). As a country, we have made considerable progress in the inclusion of exceptional students in the curricula. Inclusion means creating a learning environment with enough paraphernalia to accommodate all students, regardless of their race, gender, age, disability, religious and cultural beliefs, and sexual orientation. The government has provided academic materials, and built infrastructure that has made it easier for all individuals who desire to study, to acquire education. In addition, the government has ensured that enough teachers receive the necessary training that will enable them to work with students, exceptional ones included.
A career in education, specifically as a teacher, is highly regarded because teachers are directly involved in the learning process of a child. A teacher is the one that is entrusted by a child’s parents or guardians and the society at large, with the transformation of a child into a capable citizen, who can be relied on by the community. Teaching is, therefore, my intended career path, since it gives me an opportunity to instill in children the values that are useful, both to themselves and society as a whole. My work will simply be to guide the learners into being their best selves. I will work with children between six to fourteen years old. Students within this age bracket are more comfortable to teach since they are eager to learn, as they enter their teenage years.
For a successful teaching experience, and also to guarantee that students are in safe hands, teachers must have certain values and habits. These habits and values are collectively referred to as professional dispositions. Professional dispositions are intelligent behaviors that are apparent in a teacher’s actions (Martin and Mulvihill, 2017). Some of the professional dispositions that I think make me capable of educating both ordinary and exceptional students include a commitment to authentic learning and teaching, collaboration, critical reflection, integrity, socially-conscious respect, and responsibility, etc. (Warren, 2018).
To begin with, I am dedicated to my work. My devotion to my job will enable me to ensure that all students get an equal chance to education. I will create a conducive learning environment for my students that is safe, inclusive, and equitable for all the learners. As a teacher, I will use all the resources at my disposal to ensure that my students get the best experience and gain the necessary knowledge that will make them worthy members of society.
Secondly, I will collaborate with my fellow teachers and other professionals in education to see to it that all learners get the best education. I will also work together with parents and guardians, which will enable me to know the strengths and weaknesses of my students. For instance, the collaboration will allow me to identify students with dyslexia. Such students cannot be taught at the same pace as typical students. Such knowledge will help me plan on how to be their teacher best and will also enable me to make education more personalized by creating time to help the students that are in need of help.
In addition, critical reflection will help me deliver a learning experience that my students deserve. I will put my prejudices in check and welcome positive criticism. I will empathize with my students and their families, especially the exceptional students. I am positive that by doing so, I
