Some secondary schools in my area are experimenting with gaming as new way of assessing student learning. These schools are taking advantage of the explosion of technology. This technique is used to assess skills in language and science. Many schools that have adopted this new technique have not changed as a result of the mandated standardized tests. Most of them are using this technique alongside the standardized tests. The main advantage of using gaming technique to assess student learning is that it provides instant feedback. This technique also creates enthusiasm and allows students make social connections. However, this technique can make students to focus on winning rather than learning. Another disadvantage of using gaming is decreased student attention span.
One of the technique to assess students learning during and after instruction is open-ended that get then to writing and discussing. By answering questions will allows the teacher identify what students have learned in the kind answers they will provide. Another technique is hand signal. This technique is where students show specific number of fingers to demonstrate the level of understanding of content, where five fingers shows the maximum understanding and one finger showing minimal understanding.
In point grading system, it is not defensible for the teacher to give the student a higher grade than his or her point call for. The student should only be awarded the grade that matches the one in the point-scale. Assignment the student a grade that is lowers or higher than his or her actual points would not allow the student to actually identify and work on his or her areas of strengths and weaknesses.
An example of learning activity that could be used for assessing student learning is group discussions.
